ust dont get it. People are going insane about Donald Trump being president-elect. Its beyond the wildest anger and fear I saw even about Richard Nixon, my hero. And, as I say, I just cannot see it.
For example, this morning, I got several emails from men who had been my friends since high school. America is going through its worst days ever, said one letter. Were going to lose everything, said another.
It gets even worse. A dear old friend a woman who has been my close friend since the mid 1970s, a woman who never even liked Hillary Clinton much has simply refused to speak to me since election night. Her daughter, the wife of a wealthy real estate developer, sent me hate mail election night, when she learned I had reluctantly voted for Mr. Trump.
Why are people so upset? What has Mr. Trump done thats so awful? His choices for the Cabinet fall well within the range of the usual types Wall Street, campaign helpers, ideological bedfellows. Despite what you may have read online, none of them has made horrible statements. None is a Klansman. None is a Nazi. They have different views from those of the ACLU, but thats what you get in a free country.
The voters voted in a candidate with certain views. That candidate won fair and square. He gets to choose people he agrees with and who agree with him.
If you know Ben’s history, he had a personal relationship with Richard Nixon back when he was in college. Nixon was a friend who mentored and encouraged him.
They see the curtain coming down and are scared it will change their life.
An excellent post, well stated, and I agree on all points, with a minor exception to the above. The MSM will still beat them to death over the meaning of obscure words, and the Republicans will still cower when they do. Other than that, spot on. I would just say "able to, but not willing" and let it go at that.
“Election night 2016” brought it up for me. Look for times of 4 hrs or more.
What we, the whole world, have witnessed with these movements(Brexit, Trump et al) is encapsulated in a brief video entitled “Bambi meets Godzilla”.
Would we be reacting any differently if Hillary had won? My sister and brother-in-law are Trump haters. They criticize his campaign, call him the Mango Mussolini, say that he isn't their president, and prophesize gloom and doom for the next four years. But I have to ask myself that had Hillary won would I look on her as my president? Would I be optimistic about the next four years? Probably not. We are a deeply divided country and will remain so. Neither Trump or Clinton are capable of changing that. It's just the way things are.
1. We had just finished seven years of JFK/LBJ with all the liberal madness that entailed and several near-misses to start a nuclear war (Berlin Crisis, Cuban Missile Crisis, etc., etc.)
2. As Nixon started, we had a full-on 500,000-man war going on 10,000 miles away with a fully-developed Leftist pro-enemy movement in opposition - oh, I mean "antiwar" movement.
3. We had thermonuclear Armageddon staring us in the face with a very active Cold War pitting us against the Soviets and the Warsaw Pact and Mao's China. Much worse than ISIS, OK?
4. We had a major "space race" going full-on to the moon and that cost more Billions to support
5. We had a powerful Civil Rights upheaval in full crisis, with cities burning in 1968.
6. The Middle East was in the throes of the War of Attrition, with open combat occurring daily and the threat of major war every minute. And the Saudis had begun to use the "oil weapon" against us and the rest of the West.
I could go on, but I think that the point is made, isn't it? Nixon took all those problems on and more. He opened China and started Perestroika with the Soviets - which began the process of ending the Cold War completed by Reagan. He negotiated a good peace in Vietnam that could've saved South Vietnam if Congress hadn't been filled with Leftist slimes and a coup hadn't been in the works against him. He supported Israel in its darkest moments in '73 when the Soviets were shipping nukes to Cairo to try to overcome Sharon's drive for that capital (look it up). He signed the Civil Rights Act.
I'm really tired of the two groups that continually rag on Richard Nixon - the liberal-school-educated twits who buy that Watergate was the "crime of the Century" and the "please don't draft me" whiners of my generation.
The title is completely incorrect. They already were insane. Their reaction to Trump has just revealed it for all to see.
Thanks for proving what little memory you have and just how wrong headed your stupid posts were, last night.
*Try reading the actual "CHECKERS SPEECH", to educate yourself.
The abject lack of factual knowledge about Mr. Nixon, here of all places, is shocking and disgusting!
Would YOU start to over eat, dye your hair jet black/platinum blonde, divorce your spouse/dump whom you're seeing, withhold sex, need a coloring book, a cup of hot chocolate, or any of the other crap, that supposedly all the HATETRUMPERs need/are doing?
You “know” almost NOTHING and understand even less.
My view is that we are much better off without these people in our lives. Kick 'em to the curb. Don't bother trying to understand or reason with them, just say " I don't care ". The biggest fear of the left is losing their ability to shame people, which is slowly becoming a reality. I've said on other threads that trying to treat these people with Christian principles is seen by them as an invitation to double down.
As an aside, we should be thankful that American women did not do what the Austrian women just did - which was vote for more invaders and assaults.
You’re welcome!
People are believing the crap they see on the MSM. I blame them for causing the divisions in this country and the hysteria. If the SHTF, head straight to the nearest MSM outlet and administer some justice.
The two main subjects that have the most distortion about our recent past are Richard Milhous Nixon and the Vietnam War. According to the triumphant Left, Nixon was a "crook" and the war was a mistaken "illegal and immoral intervention in another country's civil war".
I am still waiting for honest historians to unravel the lies and distortions on these subjects. Those of us who lived through this period know the truth.
And you're right: why in heaven's name are supposed Free Republic conservatives spouting nonsense about Nixon? Did they want Humphrey or McGovern?
My mother made me a politics/news "junkie" at a VERY early age and when we went to school, we had to follow current events, which was fine, because not a single teacher I ever had, ever interjected an opinion. So...I stated following news about Mr. Nixon at a rather young age.
I also worked on his two winning presidential campaigns.
The whole stupid "CROOK" appellation, is NOT understood by 99.99999999% of the populace in general, nor those who use against Mr. Nixon here. I am REALLY getting sick of explaining that one!
And now, a poster even got the whole "cloth coat" thing all wrong! LOL
I too am still waiting for all of the damned LIES about Mr. Nixon, Nam, the damned, stupid "hippie" crap to be corrected. I may not live to see it happen, which IS why I am keeping a journal full of FACTUAL history, for my my grandson.
It's the way they are. The same people who sung the praises of the violent Standing Rock mob wanted the feds to massacre the Bundys.
Thanks, I’ll do so!
See ya’,
Ed
Wow, you’re getting a little frothing-at-the-mouth over the top, aren’t you?
I was involved with Cali GOP politics since I volunteered on John Schmitz’s congessional campaign and went door-to-door handing out fliers, and on and on from B1 Bob and on, and I’ll say it again, (and...sotto voce I’m sure the goofy Nixon apologists here will reply with their usual unhinged responses!) Nixon was NO conservative!
