One of the founding fathers of progressive rock, the British musician is known for songs including In The Court Of The Crimson King and I Believe in Father Christmas. He died on Wednesday after "a long and stubborn battle with cancer", said his manager. The news comes nine months after Lake's band-mate Keith Emerson died.

Wow. I saw ELP in their heyday, touring behind the release of the Brain Salad Surgery LP. Quite a show to see as a teenager. In recent years, I’d seen Greg play as one of Ringo Starr’s All-Starrs, which is always a fun show, and he still had the pipes. He’d typically belt out Lucky Man and a few others on his part of the show.

RIP

Epitaph is my favorite song on ITKOTCK. Funny, I got home from work yesterday afternoon and cued up ELP’s first album and then Tarkus.

Years ago, there was a old box truck I saw a few times in the area. On the back someone had painted the King Crimson “schizoid man” image from their first album, and it was really well done. I suppose that truck eventually went to the junkyard.

RIP, Greg. You did good.

I’ve begun to get nervous about my own ability to get through 2016. My morning commute is not for the fainthearted.

I believe in Father Christmas - Greg Lake - Ian Anderson

The comments at that video are a grand testament to a good man.

If you ever see Greg Lake do go and shake his hand. He'll talk to anyone if he has the time. A genuine, down to earth, decent guy. We approached him after a show and he spent a good hour talking to us. No pretension, no ego, just class. He even introduced us to one of his crew as his dear friends. And we felt like we were. Great time!

In 2009 when we were filming “Rockin’ the Wall” I asked Lake if he wanted to be in the film. For whatever reason, he declined.

I remember when he had to sub for the lead singer of Asia for a live concert on MTV from Japan.
Remember when MTV used to actually be a music channel? They had big concert promotions, gave tickets away, played music videos...ah those were the days.
RIP Greg.

Their version if Copeland’s “Rodeo” was great.

My wife, a talented artist, painted the cover of ITCOTKC for me in the early 70’s. Looked identical to the actual cover of that album.

At some point I realized I didn’t have it anymore...don’t know what happened to it.

“Take a Pebble” is my favorite. Rest in Peace, Greg, and thank you for making the most of your God-given talent. Prayers for your loved ones.

Perhaps my favorite band. I saw them in the round on a revolving stage in a small arena. arguably the best concert I ever attended, not the most fun, but three consummate technicians plying their craft flawlessly. Carl Palmer brought the house down managing a kit of maybe 50 or 60 different drums, cymbals, gongs, and the like. 69 - far to young, RIP.

“I Believe in Father Christmas” was co-written by the lyricist, Pete Sinfield who co-wrote many songs with Greg Lake especially on “Brain Salad Surgery” and “Works”.

I really liked Brain Salad Surgery, and its AWESOME album cover. It was simply one of the best pieces of artwork I had.

I still listen to the entire album every few months.

And I did think what happened to Benny the Bouncer was just wrong! Sidney was a despicable brute!

The very first concert I ever saw was Emerson Lake and Palmer in Chicago at the International Amphitheatre. It was absolutely incredible. Every concert I've ever seen since gets compared to it.

It was 1978 when synthesizers were so large they took up huge chunks of the stage. I remember Carl Palmer's drum set being huge and his drum solo took some 10+ minutes with lights, lasers, strobes, explosions, fog machines and his drum riser going up some 20 feet above the stage during it.

Then there was Fanfare for the Common Man which hilighted the large synthesizers and them "blowing up" at the end of the song with fog/smoke pouring heavily out of them and lights flashing as they descended below the stage. The crowd ROARED!!!

I used "Fanfare for the Common Man" in a video I made and synchronized the video to the music. I love that song that much.

So sad to hear of Greg Lake's passing. One of the greats to be sure. Going to get my ELP vinyl's out and play them today.

Saw them live. “Lucky Man” using headphones was a surreal experience.
