It was his Orson Welles show, just what was said in it. It’s too much to recount here, but maybe you can re-visit it later. It was just a bunch of PC crap. We tuned out, too, and went back to the football game on the radio.

It’s very rainy here, but not cold yet. It’s still 65 degrees. I’m glad for the rain.

Life is good. Cloudy today, high around 50, they’re starting to talk about snow now and again. Went into the city for a crabcake sandwich and seafood lunch. Put up 4 fresh wreaths which looks great. Maybe all the leaves are down and I’ve got them up. You were quite busy last week and ramping up for Christmas...

Here, too, but it's 48, rainy, and raw. But, the house is decorated very nicely (I got a big string of C-9 bulbs around the garage door to match the entry doors this year), electric candles in every window, four trees of the 2'-9' height are up and decorated, a fire is going, and a rosemary-reasoned beef roast with potatoes and button mushrooms is ready to serve in the slow cooker as soon as the stupid bread rises. Trying to knock out the rest of my over-winter seed planting: 20 red dwarf apples, about 30 dwarf Mandarin orange, ten rainbow grape vines, two California palm and five Canary Island date palms, and several dozen coffee (allegedly Kona variety) trees. We'll see what's sprouting in a few weeks (or, in the case of the palms, months).

I’m surprised you can grow all that down there. You’ll be able to harvest coffee and dates?

Under the right conditions, yes. The trick to the coffee trees is to keep them trimmed back into bushes, or not let them get higher than about 10'-12'. The taller, the less they'll pollinate and produce beans. Keep the root base covered in cold winter months. Same applies to the date palms, if they're planted outdoors and not kept as ornamental specimens. The palm we have planted by the pool is a date palm, and actually fruited last year. Both of them can be grown indoors in sunny areas, and if properly tended to, produce fruit. Likewise with the oranges. Coffee beans usually ripen as yellow-to-red berries, and have to have the flesh peeled off, then dried and roasted. You can do that in the oven, or buy a bean roaster. A lot of people nowadays buy raw beans, then run them through a roaster and grind them at home. I want to try my hand at growing my own.

It sounds beautiful and delicious, Viking! We have our usual lights out front on the azalea bushes (the little, incandescent multi-colored ones) and “creamy” multi-colored C-9 bulbs around our big picture window with our once-live, cut tree. I still have big BLUE bulbs—bigger than C-9s, because they’re round—on a small, live Christmas tree shaped cedar tree to honor the police. That one’s been up for a long time now. It’s all lovely.
I just browned some chicken thighs in oil and have put them in the oven to finish, just salt-pepper-garlic powder. And I have some big portobello mushroom caps I’m going to pan sauté in the chicken pan drippings. I may serve some of that wonderful leftover corn pudding on the side, too.
