Nico Rosberg has announced his retirement from Formula 1 with immediate effect following his World Championship victory in Abu Dhabi last weekend.
Rosberg, 31, edged out Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton for his maiden F1 title by five points through the 2016 season, emulating his father, Keke, who won the title in 1982.
Rosberg signed a new contract with Mercedes last spring, but ahead of Fridays FIA prizegiving in Vienna, the German announced in a press conference that he would be retiring from F1 with immediate effect.
When I won the race in Suzuka, from the moment when the destiny of the title was in my own hands, the big pressure started and I began to think about ending my racing career if I became World Champion, Rosberg wrote on his Facebook page after the announcement was made.
On Sunday morning in Abu Dhabi, I knew that it could be my last race and that feeling cleared my head before the start. I wanted to enjoy every part of the experience, knowing it might be the last time
and then the lights went out and I had the most intense 55 laps of my life.

I’m in, thanks!
Thank you for the offer to join the F1 Ping List...
You have been gracious enough to offer this to me before and I have declined as I have a rather odd schedule and do not want any information on a race prior to watching it on my DVR.
If you do not mind me asking you to remove me from the ping list prior to the first race I will happily join.
Thank you.
When there was a tangle with Lewis and Nico, it always appeared to most Nico was the one pushing a weak position.
Aggressive driving...let’s see. Mansell, Schumacher, both I would call aggressive. But I never saw Mansell intentionally steer a disabled car to the center of the track to take out his nemesis. I’d put Ham in the same category as Mansell. Rosberg would go in the Schumacher’s.
Mercedes will buy whoever they want and if they want Verstappen, they’ll get him. They aren’t going to want to cultivate a driver since Hamilton appears to have gone a bit wobbly with his jet-set rockstar BS. His little honeymoon with Justin Bieber...WTH?!?! Look at it from Mercedes POV, do you really think they want Verstappen on the other guys team next season?
Pretty shocking. I was looking forward to seeing him race again next season.
