;
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
seiche [seesh]
hear it pronounced
adjective
The water is darkened by mud and sand churned up by the ferocious currents. As the waves oscillate, the lake can become as much as 2 metres deeper at one end, while dropping 2 metres at the other. Waves violently smack one shoreline before the pattern reverses. When the conditions are just right, a seiche or standing wave can occur.

It is not rare for a seiche to form in Lake Erie, with the winds blowing west to east. Quite dramatic when it occurs.
To: Louis Foxwell
I remember the Beverly Hillbillies performing a seiche on their front porch at the end of every episode.

The Muzzies will be on a shorter leash
while the liberals cry into their vegetarian quiche
at their inability to use their nouveau gubmint riche
to prevent the onslaught of the seiche.

The skull near the top of that wave looks rather ominous. :)

The definition was taken from an explanation of Erie’s seiche wave.

A standing wave formed off the beach
Said a fellow who stood in the breach
"I never have eyed
Seiche a horrible tide!
And I can't get this limerick to rhyme."
To: hinckley buzzard
There was a major seiche in Chicago on the Lake Michigan shore when I was a kid. I believe it swept several people into the lake and 6 or 7 drown.
