Why do they not have seat belts on school buses? Would that have saved any lives?
“Why do they not have seat belts on school buses? Would that have saved any lives?”
I read once that they have assessed the risk:benefit of seat belts on school buses. The downside that mitigates the benefit is that the rescue of children in seat belts, especially when there is fire involved, is far more challenging and therefore in many instances seat belts might cost more lives.
Why do we have fools driving buses to start with?
I am an automotive restoration specialist, and have thought about the subject of seat belts in buses many times. The cost of retro-fitting and installing seat belts on buses would be enormous in the extreme.
I used to drive a school bus... 60, 70, sometimes 80 kids under 12. You do not want to have to go around undoing seatbelts on 5, 6, 7, or 8 years olds who are panicking should the bus catch fire or you get stuck on a railroad track.
The way that roof was caved in, I doubt seatbelts would have helped those under that section of roof.
neighborhood schools would also also save lives from bus accidents
My wife’s family was involved in a deal like this back in the 90s... don’t want to give TMI, but, what came to light afterwards was it was all about cost. For the school district and for the state it happened in.
