We used to laugh when CA media would warn: “A dangerous storm is coming...”
Those from the midwest would say:”Its called rain”
Now the NW DOES get some serious storms.
CA, not so much.
“If you are new to CA you realize when the rainy season hits CA drivers have no clue how to drive in the rain.”
The first rains when the oil seeps out of the roads is horrible.
But, a lot of these people can’t drive when the weather is good. I call them Beijing drivers.
LOL. True stuff. I lived in SF Bay area for almost 4 years back in the late 90s. Two examples of crazy:
During a rare thunderstorm (WITH lighting) in the Bay area, hundreds of people parked at a small college at the top of a hill near Redwood City to watch the lightning. I admit it was a sight to see as you could watch the lightning and storm across the bay. But we stayed inside the truck. Other people were standing on vans and standing in the backs of pickup trucks, One lady holding a lightning rod I mean umbrella.
On another occasion, I was heading home from San Jose (toward Redwood City). It started to hail. They were little hailstones but anyone from the middle of the country knows how they sound banging on your car. As I drove I watched people drive nice cars off the road and into ditches seeking cover under trees and/or sound walls. They were like sheep following one another into the mud where they were getting stuck with their flashers on. I think there was a "tornado" sighting in that instance. OMG! You should have seen the news that night.
It reminds me of a "Snow Storm" we once had while living in Austin, TX. The dusting of snow did accumulate for a time on the pavement (not quite an inch). The city was shutdown for a couple days. To be fair, there were some icy spots and they don't have road salt there. LOL.
Same thing in Michigan but the culprit is snow. We had our first snowstorm last weekend. You’d think nobody ever drove in the stuff before by some of the reactions. As to rain? Pfft, no problem.

My brother was stationed at Fort Campbell and they got a dusting of snow. They shut the whole town down, including the base. He told me it looked like a ghost town.
A-holes in the OVERSIZED 'PENIS-EXTENDER' FORD 'EXCREMENT' TRUCKS who can't seem to STAY IN THEIR LANE!!! Try gaining control of a massive truck once you start swerving, nearly impossible.
A 3 year old boy was RUN OVER AND KILLED by a man in a Ford truck who stated he was unable to see the child walking in front of him. Who needs a damn truck that is so high off the ground that the driver is blind to things in front of him?

I remember when it snowed in Houston several years ago. Watching people try to drive was a real hoot. Same thing happens when we get black ice on overpasses during the winter.
Also the freeway ‘s get greasy as the dry season oil buildup comes up.
Rain covered roads in LA are not the same as rain covered roads in upstate New York. It's more akin to black ice in the winter time.
