A Russian newspaper claims that president-elect Donald Trump is distantly related to Rurik, the legendary Viking who founded the Russian state. Even as Russian officials are backpedaling from what has been perceived as pro-Trump interference in the US presidential election, Zavtra says they have genealogical data linking Trump to Rurik through the family line of Trump’s mother, Mary Anne MacLeod. For context, Rurik was much more than a Viking chieftain. He was the first entry in the Rurik Dynasty, one of Europe’s oldest royal houses and founders of the Tsardom of Russia, which ruled the country for over 700 years until they were displaced by the Romanovs.

I don’t think so. Rurik Viking First Czar Novgorod is one of my 29th Great Grandfathers. There is quit a lot of Scottish blood in the line to me (Galloway, MacFergus, DeMoray, Randolph, Dunbar, Fraser, Baird), so it is very possible that Donald J trump would be a cousin.

I was in college during the era of perestroika and glastnost and had to take a humanities election so I took a class called Russian Society and something or other. Prof was a business man who had sever joint ventures going over there and had some interesting stories. Remember, at this point Russia was a great unknown to almost all westerners, few had ever set foot in it for 70 years.
One major thing that stood out was the Prof said that many many Russians had contempt for Gorbachev and Yeltsin because they thought they were weak. They, according to the prof, said a strong man like Stalin was needed in Russia. I was aghast at that idea but it stuck in my head and has gone a long way these 25 years later to explain the legend they've built around Putin, why Putin stages photo ops of himself fighting a bear or riding bare chested through the mountains. It's not just ego at play there.
Bottom line, with that as context I am not surprised that you would warm up to Trump. The respect and admire strength and despise weakness. They are, in that respect, like the USA used to be when Patton said "America loves a winner and it will not tolerate a loser!"

Uhm, uhh. I know that Russians have a love of folklore and gift of thinking big and elaborately; witness War & Peace, Gulag Archepelago, or works from Tychowski. But this is a little over the top, even for them.
This is icing on the cake.
