Officer Jeronimo Yanez faces three criminal charges for the killing of Philando Castile, Ramsey County Attorney John Choi announced Wednesday.
Choi said it was his conclusion that “use of deadly force by Officer Yanez was not justified.” Yanez was charged Wednesday with second-degree manslaughter and two felony counts of dangerous discharge of a firearm.

Nothing in that article about why the officer shot. Is there backstory on this?
Search “Castile”
Real journalism means not assuming the reader knows the storybof the original event, but filling in the pertinent details required for complete context.
This is a very poorly written article, like most today. Real journalism died years ago. Todays crop doesnt have a clue how to write news.
From what we saw in the video, these appear to be appropriate charges.
Wikipedia says that Philando said he had a Firearm and was told not to move. He moved.
On this one I must say I agree with the decision.
I don’t think the dashcam footage has ever been released, only the cell phone video taken by Castile’s passenger after the shooting.
Dashcam video wouldn’t show what the Yanez saw inside the car; a bodycam might.
I remember the gf saying he was asked for id and was getting it.
I remember now...that was the one where the woman calmly said “you told him to get his license, sir” and the cop repeatedly shouting in response (in a very agitated state) “I told him not to move”.Granted that’s not much to go on but the cop’s claim sounded “real” to me.As is usually the case I’d want to know *everything* about the cop (drugs, booze, disciplinary issues, psych history, etc) *and* everything about the dead guy (drugs, booze, criminal history, psych history, etc) before I’ll form a firm opinion.
Why would anyone want to continue to be an Law Enforcement Officer?
The girlfriend is ghetto trash. She was posting videos of them smoking pot while riding around in the car with the young child in the backseat. Great parenting.
That being said, this appears to be the right charges brought against the officer unless some other evidence is produced.
“As is usually the case Id want to know *everything* about the cop (drugs, booze, disciplinary issues, psych history, etc) *and* everything about the dead guy (drugs, booze, criminal history, psych history, etc) before Ill form a firm opinion.”
And just how would this information “help you” to form and opinion? None of what you claim you “need to know” should have any bearing on the cop shooting someone who wasn’t a direct threat. I just love you guys who “predicate your decision making” on whether or not someone “deserves killing” on their past behavior. Kinda’ like those who say the bikers killed in Whacko “deserved killing” because of their lifestyle!
As I had mentioned when this case broke, this case reeked like a week old homicide scene form day one.
The backstory was a media sensation a month or two ago.
Double check this, but the story involved:
— a less than competent victim
— a gun that may or may not have been present in the perp’s hand and not on video
— the officer’s shout to don’t move
— the victim’s disobedience
— a girlfriend with a cell phone camera and video stream to social media
How can a subject get his ID and not move at the same time? I didn’t watch any video, just gathering he was asked for his ID and told not to move, so.. WTF.
Two wildly conflicting stories. She calmly claims he was told to show his ID and the cop,in a very agitated way, responds with "I told him not to reach for it" (the first minute of so of the video).I'm inclined to believe the cop at this point. So that would mean that either she and the dead guy misunderstood the instructions that were given (certainly possible) or the woman is lying through her teeth (a lot like in the "Gentle Giant" case.
The generic "feared for my life".
“Wikipedia says that Philando said he had a Firearm and was told not to move. He moved.”
Wife of Philando was yelling at her husband...
“Don’t do it!” “Don’t do it!” as he was going for his gun.
