A 29-year-old U.S. citizen has been deported from Russia after illegally entering the country in search of a better life, Russian media reported Monday.
The man, identified as Colorado-based insurance salesman Julio Prieto, is reported to have attempted to enter Russia via its southern border with Kazakhstan. However, after being denied entry because he lacked a visa, Prieto attempted to sneak over the border and was detained by border guards on Sept. 14.
The local prosecutors office said that Prieto told them he had been looking for a better life, Ria Novosti reported in October, with hopes of finding employment in Siberia. A number of reports noted that Prieto had been born in Mexico and that he spoke English with a thick accent.
Prieto pleaded guilty to the charge of illegally entering Russia, for which he could have faced up to two years in prison. However, he was fined only 7,000 rubles ($105), and then declared exempt from that fine and given a lesser fine of 2,000 rubles ($30).
On Monday, Prieto was deported from Russia on a flight from Novosibirsk to New York, with stops in Moscow and Dublin. The Russian government paid for the flight.
A source in the bailiffs service told the Tass news agency that Prietos experience in Russia had hit him hard. He had said he wanted to stay in Russia, which initially he had liked,. He had been hoping for Russian hospitality, but he failed to get it and was deeply disappointed.

Racist!! I’m guessing he won’t get food stamps, housing, a phone, free healthcare or retirement benefits from the Russins now??!!
Gotta admit. Siberia has to be he last place anyone would look for somebody....
American Citizen - Born in Mexico...I bet he didn’t even have a US passport. I bet Obama gave him the damn citizenship. Just another illegal wanting that “better life and to be free” crap.
Is this guy an illegal?
He had been hoping for Russian hospitality, but he failed to get it and was deeply disappointed.
To wit:
“C’mon, be nice. What are you going to make me for breakfast? Enough with the ‘who the he11 are you, get out of my kitchen’ stuff already. I thought you’d be nice.”
1) It’s wrong to enter ANYONE’S country illegally, regardless of your motive.
2) Is he NUTS?? Have you ever seen photos of Russian border security? Even if you do somehow make it in they are not gonna mess around with you.
The Russians learned their lesson after welcoming another misfit, Lee Harvey Oswald.
29 and bald already. No future with the girls.
The Russian-Kazakh border isn't that fortificated. It has been an administrative border in the Soviet times. The Russians usually aren't too harsh when they think they are dealing with a fool, and the story is an example. While in another country authorities would stick to regulations. I think the fine was reduced just because he didn't have the money.
Be careful there. Most male baldness is caused by too much testosterone. Some women might like that.
How bad was this guy’s life that he thought he could have a better one by living in SIBERIA?! Not exactly the first place that springs to mind when thinking about where you’d go if you could live anywhere in the world.
A Russian newspaper reported he had produced an US passport. But the passport lacked an US 'leaving' stamp. Anyway I think the USA will soon be billed for the air ticket and the prison winter coat (~$40). )
Russia doesn't want illegal immigrants voting in their elections.

Well, that explains Mitt Romney...
How come? My text is 248 words long, the original is 267.
He probably was just trying to make a sale. He was a life insurance salesman.
Heading into Siberia without winter clothes? Mmmmmm possibly? ;)
