Greeting Gardeners. Just want to give a shout out to any veterans who may read this, and say a big thank you for your service.

Another day of great weather today. A bit cooler, but lots of sunshine. Busy day today. Canned 2 batches of beef roasts, and spent the rest of the day in the garden, then off to strength training for two hours. Just got in, grabbed an unsweetened lemonade and straight to the computer.

Garden activities today consisted of getting ready for the predicted freezing temps tonight. Collected all the green tomatoes and found some nice red ones that were hidden in the flower beds. Some of the green ones on halfway decent vines, were snipped vines and all, then stuck them in a container of potting mix to possibly root as they ripen.

Collected a few persimmons. Brought in a pot of endive. Ran out of time to row cover the Garlic, and lettuce, but hope it does ok - it is a winter variety and supposed to be hardy.

Hope you are all doing well. Prayers up for all. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

Still in the 90s here in SoCal. Everything is terribly dry and I gave up on flowers and am in the process of switching out to succulents when my shrubs die. I’ve lost some plants that felt like old friends.

We cleaned out one of the raised beds dedicated to tomatoes. They’d just run out of gas.
Still have dozens of good looking peppers growing and even blossoms flowering...

Hope everyone had a great summer and fall growing their gardens. We had a great year, we did well enough to buy a plastic mulch layer and all the supplies we will need for next year. We have added three local restaurants to our customer base which should pay big dividends next year.

This fall I have planted about 1200 garlic plants that are up and have three leaves and 3000 strawberries plants that are starting to bear fruit. I still have Cherokee purple tomatoes coming in , the wife and I are going to make salsa tomorrow before the football games start. I will charge the camera battery tomorrow and get some pics up on the next Friday thread.

Upstate NY here. Already had a hard frost. Cayenne pepper plants coming to an end. Banner year for raspberries. Kale and spinach going strong.

Season is really over here in MA with night time temps going below freezing some night, if not yet near the house. And a tomato plant that was in a 5gal container and was wilted in the summer (despite watering) now is quite healthy, if bare of fruit, as is a winter squash plant that went in really late.

But i thought the crowd here might like this old article i came across from the .scientific american:

How to Grow a Better Tomato: The Case against Heirloom Tomatoes- (but see comments) https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/case-against-heirloom-tomatoes/.

The product of archaic breeding strategies, heirloom tomatoes are hardly diverse and are no more "natural" than grocery-store varieties. New studies promise to restore their lost, healthy genes

I posted a picture of my Azalea on another thread right before the election. I dug this plant up in the early summer and placed it on the side of my house that actually doesn't get much sun. A neighbor came over to say I needed to move it to the sunny side of the house along with my "Rose of Sharon". By that time I had dug up several plants and I didn't want to dig in the heat.

We have had light frost for a couple of mornings but I wanted to show you-all a plant that hasn't bloomed in 10 to 15 years. I've lost count and was surprised at the color. Too long to remember its color when bought. -Yes, they only bloom in the Spring here in IN.

Spent Veterans Day getting the figs, ginger, turmeric, pomegranate, avocado and other tender plants moved into warmer quarters for the winter. Some that go dormant are in the basement storage room and some that remain green are in the front hall. Got about 150 or so bushels of leaves mulched into the garden and replaced about 1/3 of the deck floor. A busy weekend so it feels good to be back at work today and resting.

It was another beautiful weekend in Central Missouri.

I spent a good bit of it sitting in the Condo of Doom waiting on Bambi to visit. Saw quite a few slicks, but none that would fill a cooler so I’ll try again when I can.

Planted 150-ish cloves of garlic yesterday and covered it with ~4” of compost from the giant pile of poo. I also seeded some kale and lettuce in the cold frame. Probably too late in the season, but what can it hurt to try?

Peppers and green beans are still hanging on, the cold nights are making it tough on them though.

Pulled the last of the tomatoes in today. 19 including some small ones - I can still cut them up a bit after they ripen.

All but 3 are still green but my last one wrapped in a paper towel ripened nicely after a few weeks.

Pulled all the carrots too - some very small - gonna add to a Chuck Roast for Christmas with broiled or baked potatoes.

Green / Red / Yellow / Purple / Brown(? - red I think underneath) Peppers brought inside to escape the cold. Plus the Sweet Snacking Pepper plant (only 1 left on it right now).

Soil, eggshells and some remnants mixed to recharge over the winter outside.
