Donald Trump Just Said He'll Consider Keeping Some Major Parts of Obamacare
Fortune ^ | NOVEMBER 11, 2016 | Sy Mukherjee

He has repeatedly called the law a “disaster” and pledged full repeal. President-elect Donald Trump just announced his first big possible compromise. And it’s on, of all things, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), aka Obamacare.

Trump made President Obama’s health reform law one of his scariest political boogeymen during the 2016 campaign. He called it a “disaster” that’s crushing consumers with spiraling costs and fleeing insurers (the reality is considerably more complicated despite very legitimate problems with the ACA). And Congressional Republicans, who have voted to repeal Obamacare upwards of 60 times during the now-lame duck president’s tenure, have pledged to fully do away with it the moment they can under Trump’s administration.

But Trump told the Wall Street Journal in an interview Friday that his meeting with President Obama on Thursday, which had an air of cordiality, had convinced him to consider preserving critical Obamacare provisions like guaranteeing coverage for Americans with pre-existing conditions and allowing young people up to the age of 26 to remain on their parents’ health policies.

“I like those very much,” Trump told the Journal. Obama asked the president-elect to keep those measures intact during their meeting. “I told him I will look at his suggestions, and out of respect, I will do that,” said Trump, adding, “either Obamacare will be amended, or repealed and replaced.”

It may not be entirely surprising that Trump is, at least partially, changing his tune on a policy he’s consistently said he despises. The reality of repealing a law that provides coverage to more than 20 million Americans, no matter its flaws, is no mean feat—as evidenced by the fact that Trump’s surprise victory on Tuesday night may have helped fuel a massive and unexpected Obamacare enrollment surge on Wednesday, when more than 100,000 people signed up for individual insurance coverage through Healthcare.gov.

But there are still plenty of questions about how preserving these measures, especially guaranteed issue for people with pre-existing conditions, could possibly work alongside Trump’s and the GOP Congress’ other proposed reform to U.S. healthcare. Trump’s transition website posted some more details about what his health policies might look like on Thursday, including providing the option of “continuous coverage” for people who have already purchased individual plans and creating “high-risk” insurance pools for those with pre-existing conditions who haven’t.

It’s unclear how these various proposals could work in tandem with, at the very least, Trump’s ostensible willingness to keep guaranteed issue in place. That provision could lead to a massive adverse selection problem without Obamacare’s so-called individual mandate, which Trump and the GOP alike despise, requiring all Americans who make enough money to procure insurance so that consumers can’t just buy plans when they get sick.

sorry- i rue that second part...”kids” should not be allowed to stay on the parents health plan until age 26...it means they are cheating on premium payments for at least four years by paying kids rates...

No, he said he is considering keeping two options, pre-existing conditions and keeping kids on parent’s policy until 26 years old.

Neither will lead to single-payer.

1, kids 26 and under could be on parents policies before it was mandated by law... 2, pre existing should always have been covered. Had a friend payed almost 2 years premiums when he pulled his back out. They called it pre existing, refunded his premiums and said he was on his own... That was wrong!

These 2 options were always in Ryan’s Obamacare replacement plan. Non-story.

Much ado about nothing. Of course, in this day and age, preexisting conditions must be handled. So Fortune Mag is attempting to throw crap in the chowder. Let’s wait until the Trump Team is finished. It will be totally different and light years superior.

ObamaCare must be totally repealed for symbolic reasons if for no other. After all,Obola depended on "the stupidity of the American people" to get it passed...that and Parliamentary fraud (not allowing Scott Brown, who took "Ted Kennedy's seat",to vote).

Once repealed a substitute can be passed...which just might include one or two parts of ObamaCare.

...said Trump, adding, “either Obamacare will be amended, or repealed and replaced.”

IOWs he hasn't changed his mind on anything and hasn't committed to any specifics.

People who have the means should take care of their health.

It makes no sense to keep them from buying or renewing coverage when they want.

We’ll retain our current two-tiered system.

Forcing every one into a one-sized fits all plan doesn’t work.

If congress sends him a repeal bill, he will sign it. However Congress is not going to send him a simple “repeal” bill without also including a “replace bill”. There are too many people who were forced into Obamacare and are now dependent on it to pass a simple “repeal” bill. Congress sent the repeal bills in the past on the correct assumption that Obama would veto it if it ever got past the Senate. It was Kabuki theater.

Trump is just being real.

'2 Parts. BOTH of which are IN the House GOP plan.'

So what. It was first repeal obamacare. Then it became repeal and replace.

Nothing new. These two features are in the Ryan healthcare plan that’s been gathering dust on Obozo’s desk for the past four years.

Hell, in NYS it goes to 29!!!

I say any “child” that is on their parent’s heath care shouldn’t be voting. Also if said “child” is qualification for getting “child” support payments (the ultimate wealth redistribution program) to mommykins, said “child” over the age of 18 should NOT be allowed to vote!

why can’t the rules of Medicare be changed to take care of the 20 million who can’t afford private insurance, if it really is that large a group??

Remember, Obamacare - ACA - was only meant to be an intermediate stop on the way to single payer as in Canada and England. What we call the Democratic Party is really a socialist party. If Hilary had been elected she would have continued the plan and by the end of her term we would look like a European Socialist country. And within a short period of time, a global government with loss of sovereignty for all nations.IMO
