‘Westworld’ Delivers A Stinging Critique Of Unlimited Human Freedom

Conservatives would do well to watch “Westworld,” HBO’s highly anticipated new drama. The show is based in part on a 1973 movie of the same name, which was the directorial debut of Michael Crichton, author of many acclaimed novels including “Jurassic Park,” “The Andromeda Strain,” and “Disclosure.”

“Westworld” was created by Jonathan Nolan (the brother of Christopher Nolan, director of “The Dark Knight” trilogy) and his wife Lisa Joy, with the omnipresent J.J. Abrams as an executive producer.

The show centers on a futuristic Western-themed amusement park where guests pay $40,000 a day to live out their most intimate fantasies with advanced humanoid robots called hosts. All of this scripted conformity is under the direction of programmers and narrative writers, who are under the guiding hand of the mysterious Dr. Robert Ford, Westworld’s Park Director and one of its original creators.

On its sleek surface, Westworld presents a mirror image of our culture. The hosts promote the idea that what happens in Westworld, stays in Westworld. In programmed speeches, hosts urge guests to unleash their most strongly held passions and satisfy their deepest cravings, whatever they may be.

On a deeper level, however, the show presents a much-needed critique of this false understanding of freedom and the toll it takes on the human soul. “Westworld” allows us to see the ugly truth behind our race toward modern liberalism’s end goal of complete individual autonomy.

The problem is they want freedom and free stuff with none of the responsibility that having freedom or getting free stuff entails...

It’s always someone else is the boogieman and not their own internalized greed/envy ( they are their own monsters they are oblivious to)

I’ve watched two episodes so far. Interesting concept. Curious to see how they deal with the premise sociologically by the end.

Animals kill and rut. We can do all that with the lowest most primitive parts of our brains. Gd has given us so much more. Souls, frontal lobes... We are supposed to make logical and moral sense of life, as best we can. It is decivilized to live like squirrels.

That “slavery” of which you speak is what gets libidiot votes. There motto is “If it feels good, do it”. The Rats and the Muzzies cater to the basic human urges, which obviously garners millions to the cause. Women simply become a tool.

Should I read the linked article? I have not, but let me guess...

It is a libtard who wrote it, and he/she/it assumes that conservatives are advocates of unlimited personal freedom, and that there should be limits, and that we are unaware of this reality?

Okay, so I went and read it...I think the author makes the mistake of assuming liberals are interested in unlimited freedom as the “end goal” of modern liberalism, in the mold of a Roussouian environment...

That isn’t what modern liberalism is. Modern liberalism is complete tyranny.

This is what you and many Liberal fail to understand...MORALS are a human aspect that can only be exhibited by HUMANS.

Our government cannot regulate nor enforce “morals”. Our government does not have “morals”, they have laws and rules that are built around or based upon morals, but if the reason a person does or does not follow these laws and rules is not based on their own internal feelings that this is the “right thing” or “wrong thing” to do, then the law still didn’t regulate their morals, it just changed their actions. Their “morals” still tell them what they think is right and wrong.

Smoking pot is a perfect example. It has been illegal in America for decades, and yet I will bet that most of America doesn’t think that smoking pot is any more immoral than having a beer. Government says it’s illegal, wrong, bad, unhealthy, and you can’t do it. But our morals tell us that smoking a naturally grown product is probably less dangerous than drinking your average government-approved alcoholic beverage!

What am I missing here?

The programming, it IS very subtle.
Liberalism = freedom.

We know different of course because we know history.

“Westworld” allows us to see the ugly truth behind our race toward modern liberalism’s end goal of complete individual autonomy.

What post #2 said. The last thing modern liberalism wants is to have all individuals have complete autonomy.

However, acknowledging that lie would have entirely undermined the writer's phony thesis, so, hey, what the heck, who cares about objective reality when you've got an agenda to push, right?
