Conservatives would do well to watch Westworld, HBOs highly anticipated new drama. The show is based in part on a 1973 movie of the same name, which was the directorial debut of Michael Crichton, author of many acclaimed novels including Jurassic Park, The Andromeda Strain, and Disclosure.
Westworld was created by Jonathan Nolan (the brother of Christopher Nolan, director of The Dark Knight trilogy) and his wife Lisa Joy, with the omnipresent J.J. Abrams as an executive producer.
The show centers on a futuristic Western-themed amusement park where guests pay $40,000 a day to live out their most intimate fantasies with advanced humanoid robots called hosts. All of this scripted conformity is under the direction of programmers and narrative writers, who are under the guiding hand of the mysterious Dr. Robert Ford, Westworlds Park Director and one of its original creators.
On its sleek surface, Westworld presents a mirror image of our culture. The hosts promote the idea that what happens in Westworld, stays in Westworld. In programmed speeches, hosts urge guests to unleash their most strongly held passions and satisfy their deepest cravings, whatever they may be.
On a deeper level, however, the show presents a much-needed critique of this false understanding of freedom and the toll it takes on the human soul. Westworld allows us to see the ugly truth behind our race toward modern liberalisms end goal of complete individual autonomy.

Huh? Modern liberalism wants to enslave everybody to an all-powerful State where there is zero individual autonomy. You are told what to study, what work to do, where to live, what transportation to use, what to eat and not eat, ad nauseum. What am I missing here?
“hosts urge guests to unleash their most strongly held passions and satisfy their deepest cravings, whatever they may be.”
That’s not freedom. That’s slavery to their passions, urges and cravings.
Post #3 says it better than I could, however if you read the entire article it fleshes out this concept.
This “analysis” is off the mark. I have been enjoying the Westworld series.

I see it as a critique of western civilization’s abuse of an indigenous people. So there.
I watched a few episodes. It has some good interesting science fiction. After a while it seemed disgusting.
I am interested in this show but haven’t seen it. It does seem to examine some good questions about morality and AI.
“What am I missing here? “
Nothing as far as I can tell.
And, there’s nothing wrong with unlimited human freedom as long as it does not injure another person. Hell, our nation was founded on such.
Westworld delivers HBO perversions
This is a legitimate question, i.e., what limits should or can there be on human behavior? How far SHOULD freedom go in our society? I say that because the majority opinion now in the US seems to be that there should be virtually no governmental restrictions on one’s hedonistic desires, or what you can or cannot do with your body. The Roe decision spawned the notion that the right to “control” one’s body was paramount, and above the right to life of a fetus in the womb.
Also, when you consider how emotionally fragile the millennials seem to be, they might be easily sold on a chance to be able to completely indulge their personal sexual desires, with complete disregard to any other human being, and use a machine instead. I am as big a proponent of individual liberty as most anybody, but not oblivious to the possible pitfalls that might occur when human nature runs completely amok, with no moral constraints at all.
Yes and they become addicted to those self destructive pleasures which end up as scars upon the soul which can never heal. I saw some of the free episodes and found it compelling in its storytelling of the degradation of man and the sensitization of the created robots. The writers are quite good and creative.
I agree it is a very legitimate question. Always has been.
I haven’t seen the show.

Thats not freedom. Thats slavery to their passions, urges and cravings.
Spot on succinct truth!
Requires a strong stomach.
Yeah, but when you weigh that against the "right" to have sex with anyone and everything, the other freedoms just don't stack up. Get with the program!
