To all of the race originalists who are going bonkers because Tilda Swinton plays a character in Doctor Strange who was an Asian dude in the original comic books, answer me this: Why didnt you go ballistic when James Bonds Miss Moneypenny was played by a black woman? The Ancient One, a mystical guru in Kathmandu who helps the grievously wounded New York surgeon Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) recover his abilities and then some, was portrayed as a beardy old Tibetan man in comics dating back to 1963 (or 1961, when he was called the High Lama). Swinton was cast in the role, but then again, the white character Mordo from the comics is played by the black actor Chiwetel Ejiofor in the film.

Yeah, we were all called racist because we didn’t think Idris Elba should play James Bond.
And Mordo should never have been black. I’m a fan of the original comic and Hollywood does not know better than Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Also, could it possibly be that a lot of Asians don’t like the fact that one of the few Asian characters was race and gender changed from the original yet they left the Asian servant. I’m not one for complaining about race but I do think that they should stick to the source material if it’s good and the original Doctor Strange comics are great.
I used to read Doctor Strange back in the 60’s - still have a few dozen Silver Age comics. Might have to check it out at the theatre. Who wants to buy a Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. #1?
The Norse god Heimdal can be black, but the Ancient One can’t be white? But a woman is OK? I think I see a double standard here.
What is there, like, 35 people who even heard of the comic book character before?
Who gives a crap. Their are actors. They are supposed to make you believe they are the characters.
90% of the people going to this movie won’t even know who Dr. Strange is.
Tilda Swinton is box office poison but she keeps getting cast.
No thanks, but I’ve got Fantastic Four #1. Thinking about sending it off for appraisal and then putting it on auction. What is valuable to our generation may not be valuable to the next. That’s what kept me from getting another hot rod or muscle car.
I will always think of her as Gabriel in the movie Constantine.
Or ‘Strange Tales’, issue #135, August 1965. The very first App. of Nick Fury as ‘Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ I have it in my collection. (I believe he got his ‘Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.l.D.’ book in 1968 or so, I might be off on that year though. Long time ago huh?!!)
Because a) Super Hot = Naomi Harris, and Definitely Not = Tilda Swinton. b) Monasteries are co-ed facilities essentially never, and c) In the twenty-first century a government employee is more likely to be a minority female than just about anything else, whereas, in the 1960's she was likely to be white.
Mordo should never have been black, either. How many barons are there who are black?
As for the nonsense about "The High Lama" I haven't the foggiest idea what this writer is talking about. I have the Dr. Strange debut in Strange Tales #110 within an arm's length (between me and my kids it's in no shape for sale, so don't even bother to ask) and he is never called anything but the Ancient One in any of the books that I can recall. Sounds like a retcon, in addition to which there are no Dr. Strange stories before July 1963. (April, actually, but they post dated all of their publications in those days.) In particular, there is nothing I'm aware of in 1961.
That was about the time I stopped watching James Bond movies.
Why we did not complain when Moneypenny was played by a black chick but are complaining when The Ancient One is being played by a white one.
Next stupid question.
She might be a little strange, too.
If: Progressives get their panties in a knot about it.
Then: It don’t mean shi....er...Obamastuff.
Forgot to add, Tilda may be a lib (methinks she is), but to me at least, she’s still very interesting looking.
