“Harry Carry looking down...”
.
.
.
Sad that no one remembers Brickhouse. He was THE Cubs man when Carray was at the White Sox badmouthing the Cubs every chance he got.

To this day, I never liked Harry. It was a Jack Brickhouse “Old Style” (official beer) friendly confines. Harry and “Bud” (which was the White Sox beer he brought with him) are just a footnote to me. But I guess I’m old, and after all them years of the Cubs having Banks and stuff and still losing, and Brickhouse being the announcer through all that (Kingman, Dejesus, Buckner, etc) when I hear about how “Harry would be proud” it irks me when they don’t mention the original “Cubs Man” Jack.

It’s appropriate that you bring that up.

I’m not a former resident fan. I addressed what I knew about th team, but it was a long distance relationship for me. Locals would probably identify much more with your insight.

Thanks for making your point. If I had been a local, I’d probable agree with you. In fact I do based on your comments.

There aren't as many Cubs fans still around from when Jack Brickhouse did the games as there are who remember Harry Caray. I still remember how hard Jack worked to find something positive to talk about with the Cubs back when the manager would fill out the lineup card; first Ernie went in the clean-up spot, then the manager would walk the dugout; the first pulse he felt led off, the next pulse would bat 2nd, and so it went.

Of course, there was a young guy named Billy Williams, and Ron Santo, and Kenny Hubbs, and ......but it was Ernie and Jack Brickhouse who were there year after year. Even through the College of Coaches, and Merritt Ranew, Sammy Taylor, Elvin Tappe, Dick Bertell, Dale Long, Bob Will, and a string of names and faces that compete with Marv Throneberry in the "who was that guy?" trivia games.

Looking at the picture down-thread, I remember thinking how much Jack Brickhouse looked like my father. And now that I have more forehead than hair-line, I notice a resemblance. If only I could be so cheerful all the time...

Hey, Hey!
