So is this the Chief of the Department, Bureau Chief, Supervising Chief, Assistant Chief or Deputy Chief? If it is THE police chief (’the’ was used later in the piece), should have used his name ... if one of the others, something more than “a” chief is what I’m looking for as a better source confirmation. Why be wishy washy & not use THE police chief’s name if that is who is being quoted? This is the kind of pussy footing around stuff that makes pieces like this (& I think it’s well written, unlike many other articles) less credible, if they are credible at all.

There is no title Police Chief in the NYPD. There is a chief of department and there are chiefs of different units within the department. These are, even in the case of zChief of Ds, uniformed members of the service. The Comissioner and his deputy commisioners are civilian leadership, Blue Bloods notwithstanding. They are not directly involved in day to day police work but in developing strategies and tactics, responding to community and political pressures. But were this story to be true the Chief described would be either Chief of Department Gomez, or Chief of Ds Boyce. And if this were true Commissioner O’Neill AND his boss, DeBlasio would know about it yesterday. The email studpff could legitimately be kept by the Feebs for NatSec reasons. The sex stuff, committed in the confines of the five boroughs, that would belong to the NYPD and Manhattan DA. And if true we would know because the Feebs would have to go to federal court to claim jurisdiction. So without names or until names are named this is bogus.
