One reason why it is used for solar energy is that solar irradiance at earth's surface is approximately 1 kilowatt/square meter. It makes the math easy.

I hear ya, but that’s about the same as a square yard, right? Communicates so much more easily in general conversation, seeing as most Americans think in standard English measurements.
