An Afghan woman immortalised on the cover of
National Geographic magazine in 1985 as a
green-eyed 12-year-old has been arrested
in Pakistan for holding fake identity papers, officials say.
Sharbat Gula could face a fine and up to 14 years in jail.
"I object to this action by the authorities in the strongest possible terms.
She has suffered throughout her entire life, and her arrest is an
egregious violation of her human rights."

The woman has had a difficult life and was put in a difficult situation by having been singled out for initial & later photographs, not at all of her doing, as others have pointed out. She was a 12-yr old in a refugee camp. The woman did not seek out notoriety. God only knows what she is facing in her hard life.
Being BORN in Afghanistan guarantees her a "difficult life," that's for sure.
She might have been singled out but she wasn't FORCED to pose. I'm sure she and her family were PAID plenty of afghanis to have her photo taken. That's a standard that all news people are ready to pay out. NOTHING is free.

This country is one of God's poorest places on earth.
When my husband and I lived in the middle east this was one country we were warned NOT to visit. [U.S. and K.S.A. warnings]
It's poverty was only topped by its danger for tourists.
Yes, some Saudi men have mistresses. Those who have the riyals to keep their mistresses on the Med in Lebanon are NOT the typical Ali, Mohammad and Fahad--"Tom, Dick and Harry" of the K.S.A.
The thirty Saudi men I worked with each had only ONE wife, took vacations with family and never left the Kingdom...except to drive over to Bahrain to shop. The men there were DRAGGED around the Bahrain shopping malls much like men here are sometimes DRAGGED around suburban shopping malls with their wives.
The K.S.A. is a closed country. There are only business visas and entry/exit visas for those living and working there...no visitor visas. So, the men and women who live there are there by invitation only.
The only visitor visas that are allowed are for IMMEDIATE family of those Americans working there.
ALL that excludes the time of the HAJ, of course. All Hajjis have "Muslim" stamped on their passports, so no other faiths would be allowed to visit Mecca. Who ELSE would want to GO to that nasty place?
Maybe Huma went there with her family to Haj. If that is so, then her family is wealthy.
My, youre clever.
