More than 500 students protest Boston Latin dress code

A new dress code at Boston Latin School has sparked outrage by students.

More than 500 students have signed an online petition protesting the school’s new dress code, which bans several things such as spaghetti straps and “gang-related clothing or colors.”

Students say the policy discriminates against female students and minorities.

I know right? That statement is both racist and sexist. I mean, gender is not binary...

Most countries have school uniforms the moment they can (barely) afford them. Its surprising how low on the income level this kicks in. Even in Africa.

My grandmother, born in Russian in the Victorian era once told me that men who had been the first persons in their families to learn to read and write proudly wore pens in their outside jacket breast pockets as their badge of literacy in a largely illeterate society.

The school should change the dress code to olive drab BDUs and WWII style boondockers. No alterations allowed.

Years ago this school was sued when a white girl was denied admission but she had a higher entrance exam score than minorities.

They enroll 35% minority students - and Asians aren’t counted as minorities.

Boston Latin is a public school with competitive admissions by examination, similar to San Francisco’s Lowell and New York’s Stuyvesant. No tuition.

There arent many of these in the US. There would be more if the educational establishment hadnt adopted an ideological position against tracking - more than 70 years ago.

The existing such schools are remnants of a bygone era.

I was wrong; thanks for the correction.

I have been inspired to modify my solution. In addition to expelling those who won't abide the rules, I would apply the even more retrograde solution of uniforms. And let the boys learn to iron their own shirts and shine their own shoes.
