duck duck go is a good search engine. Seems faster than google.

But you can ‘lion tame’ google most of the time through narrowing searches and exact phrase searches.

Sometimes I go to ‘duck duck go’ and use the web address on google so that I can load ‘text only’ caches.

Start Page is a great private search engine. It also has a proxy option that allows you to safely check suspect links.
