I am particularly wondering about the translate applications which Google, Microsoft and others have as an application to run on your phone.

How does one install programs like that, on a pc please?

I know this is probably a really dumb question, but I don't actually know the answer, maybe others are also curious.

Thanks.

You can just go to www.google.com translate, or maps. Run them directly off the web.

An app is really just a specialized website connected to a button on your phone.

Go to www.google.com and when you search anything it will give you choices of what you want to see.

or go straight to:

https://translate.google.com/

https://maps.google.com

Good Lord,
Avoid using Anything from Google or Microsoft if you care about your privacy.
Google and Microsoft keep all of your search interest queries and shares that data world wide with data brokers, data analysts, marketing companies and the government.
Especially avoid installing Apps on your phone and PC.
Watch all of the permissions you had to allow when you install and use an App:
Access to your contact lists, files, camera, microphone - Really?

Remember, the Silicon Valley punks consider YOU their product.

on Google maps, how does one disable the “have a nice drive,” message? I hate that. Blocks the screen and everything.

If you use the Google Chrome browser, you can go to the chrome web store and download the Chrome extensions for each of the apps. They’ll then be part of your browser. There are many other apps. you can add also.
