Although Stephen Stills never became a Monkee, despite auditioning for the band and their kickass TV show (and then telling his buddy Peter Tork to join the band), he did wind up playing on a handful of Monkees sessions.
His guitar can even be heard on one of the band's most smokin' tunes, Tork's "Long Title: Do I Have to Do This All Over Again? from the Head soundtrack album (1968).
However, a lot of people don't know that Neil YoungStills' Buffalo Springfield and CSNY bandmateappears on more Monkees' tracks than Stills. You can hear his guitar on "As We Go Along" and two outtakes, "Smile" and "That's What It's Like Loving You."
That said, the best of the bunch is a little-known tune that appeared on the band's early 1969 album, Instant Replay.

Used to surf SoCal.....
I'm admittedly a geezer, but I can't understand why it's "gauche" for the R&R HOF to induct musicians I've never heard of, whilst ignoring the likes of The Monkees and Paul Revere and the Raiders.

The same could be used to put down Motown artists (who didn't write or play their hit-machine-factoried songs either).
Davy Jones was an actor in the stage production of Oliver Twist and can be seen on the Ed Sullivan Show on the same episode that The Beatles made their debut on.
Yes and Neil Diamond wrote one of the songs on the new Monkees’ album (something from the vault). The album is a mix of demos that have been augmented and new productions.
Davy Jones even sings one.
The Rolling Stones have been doing this as well lately (polishing off unfinished songs in the vaults).
MGM released a previously canned Roy Orbison album.
David Bowie has several unreleased (finished) albums that never came out and Prince has hundreds of them.
ha ha, I’ve always secretly liked The Monkees, but no one I knew way back when would be caught dead listening to them...... never bought any of their vinyl, though, but enjoyed their sound when I heard it.....
I had a special reason for enjoying the Monkees. I had a squirrel monkey as a pat, and he loved listening to them!!! 8>)
I honestly believe it was because they were assembled for a TV show, and hadn’t formed on their own, making them less legitimate in people’s eyes. However, good music is good music regardless, and their TV show was fun and entertaining as well. I think they gained more acceptance as time marched on.
That was a strange movie.
One can never have too much fringe ....
It still cracks me up that Jimi Hedrix was an opening act for The Monkees.
You’re right. It was Bruce Springsteen’s mother who was the legal secretary. There weren’t many other job opportunities for women in those days.
Ha, I never knew that!
Yes, because of the TV show aspect I always heard them referred to as a “fake” group (the few times I heard them referred to at all). ...and also the Top40ish aspects, which everyone I grew up with disdained. But the put out some good music.
Andy Partridge of XTC also wrote a song on the new album.
Johnny Cash performed with The Monkees on his TV show.
