Leo is 10 years old. For most of his life he's lived as a girl, but this summer he began to speak openly about his sense that this didn't feel quite right. With research help for his parents, he's decided he is non-binary - in his case, both masculine and feminine - though for the moment he dresses as a boy and has taken a male name. This is Leo's story in his own words.
I'm not a boy.
I thought I was a boy, because I'm not entirely a girl. We tried that for a bit, and I thought: "No, this is not right."
Then we did some research and we found the word is gender non-binary... and it really works, it's just me.
I don't know what age I was when I identified that I wasn't feeling right.

Sorry, kid. The binary is correct. The choice is one or the other, but not both. The choice is made at the moment of conception and is beyond the control of the mother, the father, or the child. This is how it works in nature.
Failure to recognize that is contrary to nature.
“Its all about me
Its all about me
It cant about thee
Its too easy to see
Ita all about me”
It’s all about the fakakta parents and the destruction of their child in the name of making a name and getting some money out of it.
I’m curious how a boy or girl “feels” their sex. I knew I was a boy because I had a penis. It wasn’t that complicated. I didn’t feel like I was a boy. I was a boy.
So, I suppose it makes sense, in that (horrifically twisted) context. What a nest of snakes the Liberal mind is.
yep. And, in the exceptionally rare (1 in a million, if what I've read on FR is correct) cases where it is indeed "Both" or "Neither" .... we'll figure out a way to deal with it. No need to let a few hundred people hold an entire nation hostage.
Someone needs to explain to the kid, "Sometimes you don't like the cards you're dealt, but you still gotta play 'em." My guess is there's no Dad on the scene, or he's a neutered nebbish.
A binary 10 year old is 2 decimal years old.
Where's this kid's father? Or, even, just someone to say "No." and/or explain the facts of life to this poor kid.
Having raised a kid, and been around plenty of them in the process, I can't even imagine this topic coming up. Granted, I live in a conservative small-town, but the conversation, "Dad, I think I'm a binary gender" would uniformly be met with "Nope. You're not." and that would be the end of the conversation. The kid would grow up to be well-adjusted and happy, and life would continue on.
Its one thing when a kid is batty, but the adults that go along need to be shot along their vertical axis from the bottom.
Counseling would never work. There's only one solution. Take their kid away. I'll lay odds it has same sex parents though.
Or (God forbid...) OCTAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fido is 70 dog-years old. For most of his life he’s lived as a person, but this summer he began to speak openly about his sense that this didn’t feel quite right. With research help for his parents, he’s decided he is non-binary - in his case, both human and canine - though for the moment he dresses as a doggie and has taken a doggie name. This is Fido’s story in his own words.
I’m not a human.
I thought I was a human, because I’m not entirely a doggie. We tried that for a bit, and I thought: “No, this is too ruff.”
Then I fetched some research and we found the word is species non-binary... and it really works, it’s just me.
I don’t know what age I was when I identified that I had been barking up the wrong tree.
Actually I told my teacher first. I got really frustrated because I asked why none of the kids got dog’s parts in a play that we were doing. Plus they never let me lift my leg on fire hydrants, and they looked at me funny when I sniffed trees. It wasn’t right.
I pulled her over and said: “I’m not a human.”
I would explain scientifically why they are incorrect. I’m a programmer and the binary switch is either on or off. There is no ambiguous in my world.
Confused parents ==> Confused Children
So, is he neither a “0” or a “1”, or some other base entirely?
Oh my, someone after my own heart!
Then there are those dang analog computers...or hybrids...
Yes, the center of the universe!
It’s all about me!!
That was my near-non-binary moment. As in ZIP - Zilch - Zero.
Those things should come with warning tags.
Sometimes I feel like a binary switch in an analog world.
