WATCH: JUCO football player arrested for punching out ref (CA)
NBC Sports ^ | September 11, 2016 | Kevin McGuire

Video at link.

Yesterday we saw USC left tackle Chuma Edoga get himself ejected from a game against Utah State after getting a little bit too physical with a ref during the heat of the moment, but this video from the junior college ranks is even worse. Mt. San Antonio offensive lineman Bernard Schirmer took unsportsmanlike conduct to the next level when he allegedly punched a ref while being restrained, knocking the ref to the ground and later being taken away in handcuffs by local authorities. He was charged with suspicion of battery.

He was such a good boy and turning his life around until this Ref disrespected him. A real punk.

The kid would most likely be trouble on any team. I am in no way defending the player punching out an official, but, the official was overly aggressive. The official, IMHO, should have disengaged the player after separating the two players. He was relying too much on his authority and was in the face of the player too long. The player obviously has impulse control problems.

Watch the film, JMHO.

From all of the articles I could not discern the race of the JUCO player, he's mixed or really got a dark suntan. None of the articles mentioned it and some of the Google links showed a Samoan man and a black man with the same article.

It looked like to me the player was going after another player and the ref broke it up and pushed him back but the player kept coming back, it’s not a good thing to keep chest bumping a ref.

Shirmer’s the victim here! The ref’s calls were way too offensive and oppressive for the player to handle. He needed a safe space but the ref wouldn’t give it to him so the player lashed out uncontrollably!

On the first thread I posted a Freeper posted a pic of his sister (she is black) saying he didn’t punch the ref, he punched his own helmet. LOL!

The player wasn’t following the refs orders. He was standing there still arguing. Typical.

Good one, safe spaces should now be allowed in football. :)

I did watch the video.

One of the truism in life is ‘don’t hit the girl’.

Also goes for refs in any sporting event. We’ve all had to deal with unfair calls but its part of your conditioning to get along later in life.

I’m not necessarily disagreeing with it’s just that I’ve gotten real tired of these pukes.

Community college near my house; wow! How’d it feel when you were a football player, as your career just ended.

I can’t explain why, but there was something humorous in that yellow flag being thrown after the thug hit the ref...

the player was huge compared to the ref....not only is hitting girls supposed to be wrong, but hitting someone obviously much smaller than you....not good...

5 year suspension from college football, charges are being considered. The player’s explanation which the college is backing is it was an accident, the player’s elbow knocked the ref out cold.

The ref also has declined to file charges, and honestly, of everyone, that makes me believe the claims, that it was an accident.

The college is also appealing the suspension. Looks like that appeal has legs, but that was absolutely his last game this season.
