I agree with you here. The giraffe killing was needless, simply to satisfy ones vanity. It was simply wasted, not used for food or anything. Giraffe populations are in decline. “Buffalo” Bill Cody would ride in a train and shoot buffalo in like fashion, leaving them to rot. He “earned” the moniker “Buffalo” by having shot 250 bison in one day, all of which I assume were useless kills, left to rot. Indians were also known to stampede entire herds of bison off cliffs, how many were used for food or clothing is not known.
A sad part of the bison history which almost drove them to extinction. I did read one author who claimed the bison were decimated , leaving only 14 at one time in the US. But the last arbiter on this question should not be the clown Piers.

And if that wasn’t enough.... most buffalo hunters agreed that the best bullet lubricant was 50% bees wax and 50% sperm whale oil. You had to off the whales to shoot the buffalo.

In Africa you think an animal killed by a trophy Hunter was left to rot? I seriously doubt it. People lined up for meat from that animal.
I have never been on an African hunt but I know people who have.

Except in those parts of Africa it's good economics for the natives & it gives them a reason to keep the animals alive & healthy. It's truly not the same as what you cited in regard to Buffalo Bill Cody. However think about it if the bison herds hadn't been decimated, think of what driving west on the interstates would be like if a bison herd as large as "horizon to horizon" decided to migrant.

Killing a giraffe is not cool unless absolutely necessary (found sick or lamed) or essential as food. How many documented giraffe attacks on humans?
I couldn’t kill any large animal that wasn’t bothering me at the time. If I see a lion and it goes `burp’, then it isn’t a threat.
Now...cape buffalo are different. Always in a nasty mood, buffs are the Muslims of the animal world. Someone wrote that a cape buffalo looks at you like you owe him money. It can quickly turn into kill or be killed with a buff.
Just my 2 cents. Not an African hunter but a close friend is.

“I agree with you here. The giraffe killing was needless, simply to satisfy ones vanity. It was simply wasted, not used for food or anything.” — oh you are so sure it wasn’t used for food are you? Giraffe is good eating and it most certainly WAS used for food, fed a lot of locals for sure. And the money it brought in helped ensure funding for anti-poaching efforts, why don’t all you dogooders go donate some money then? No? Well then shut up.

It was simply wasted, not used for food or anything. Wrong.
The giraffe was give to a local village who ate it.

Your history is incorrect.
Cody shot buffalo as a commercial hunter to feed the crews building the railroad.
He was an exceptional hunter, rider, and shooter.
A great many of the buffalo that he killed were hunted from horseback and shot at close range in wild and dangerous riding.
