Some cannot crawl on hands and knees or throw bean bags through hoops
This is affecting their ability to learn in class say researchers
Too many four-year-olds are not ‘physically ready’ to start school amid increasingly sedentary lifestyles and over-reliance on screens, a new study has revealed.
They are struggling with basic balance and co-ordination skills such as managing to walk in a straight line.
Researchers warn that problems cut across social classes, with youngsters spending too long in car seats and turning to iPads and iPhones instead of physical activity.
Early years specialists in Loughborough University’s School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences tested 45 reception youngsters aged four and five at a state primary school in Leicester and an independent school in York.
They discovered large numbers ‘experiencing problems with balance and coordination’ that affected their ability to learn in class.

I have friends working in "education" in city schools, and it seems there is a direct relationship - the more broken the home and the worse the parents, the more cognitive, emotional and physical difficulties young children have.

A lot of the techies don’t allow their young children to use electronic devices until they’re older. Send them to Montessori schools and such, no computers. I suspect they know it affects cognitive development. Allowing an iPad or similar to be an electronic babysitter of sorts has its price. My own niece is glued to hers constantly and is depressed without it. Worries me, but my sister sees nothing unusual about it.

My kids were very active and fit, but I doubt that they could have walked in a straight line at that age. Why would a 4 y/o ever do that when there are so many things to see in all directions?
It is, but large motor skills like walking, jumping, and throwing should be pretty solid at 4.
Only 45 kids? That is one hell of a study, if you can even call it that.
Children need exercise. Adults need exercise. My balance is bad now because I reinjured my knee (in 2009, if I recall correctly). I’m working out with weights and a treadmill, but I have problems with balance. For the last few weeks or so, I’ve increased my workouts, but I’m shocked at how slow my progress has been.
I feel sorry for these poor little ones. Their parents need to pay more attention.

No. I prefer walking or working out with weights. For the last few weeks I’ve been doing 2-2.5 miles 5-6 times a week, along with lower body weight work 3 times a week. On Sundays, I sometimes work, er.. “play” in the garden for 1-3 hours. :)
I was a runner, previously. Walking is a compromise, but I feel blessed to be able to do it.
