A news release released by the Madison County Sheriff's Office has shed new details surrounding the death of a 2-year-old boy who went missing from his home Tuesday night.

According to the release, the child, whose name is being withheld, went missing around approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday in the northwest portion of Madison County off Highway 45. Madison County Sheriff's Office deputies and Huntsville Police Department officers were dispatched to the area and "immediately assessed the situation and determined the need for search and rescue operations," according to the release.

The Department of Emergency Management was notified and activated Search and Rescue teams from Madison, Carroll, Johnson, Benton and Washington counties, and additional assistance in the search was provided by the Mennonites Disaster Services, volunteer fire departments from Hindsville, Bohannon, Wesley, Japton, Kingston, Huntsville, Forum/Alabam, Marble, Clifty, Nob Hill and Piney Point, Arkansas Forestry, National Park Service and Arkansas Game and Fish. Arkansas State Police also responded with personnel and provided a helicopter for aerial support, and the American Red Cross responded and provided support to the searchers.

According to the release, the search intensified around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday and continued until 9:45 a.m., at which time a team consisting of Washington County Search and Rescue and volunteers discovered the child, who had fallen into a hole in the field adjacent to the family residence.

"Rescuers immediately extricated the victim from the hole, while Madison County Emergency Medical Services responded and determined the victim was deceased," the release states. "Investigation revealed the hole to be an exposed septic tank."

The release continues by stating the child's body is being sent to the state medical examiner, and that investigation into the incident is continuing; however, foul play is not suspected.

ORIGINAL STORY: A toddler that went missing north of Crossbow Ranch between Hindsville and Clifty Tuesday evening was found deceased at approximately 9:45 a.m. Wednesday.

According to a press statement from Sgt. Rusty Johnson with Arkansas Game and Fish, a search for the 2-year-old boy was initiated around 8 p.m. Tuesday. The search continued through the night, with multiple agencies and volunteers participating, including Game and Fish, the Madison County Sheriff's Office, Madison County Department of Emergency Management, Arkansas State Police, Arkansas State Forestry and more.

"We had searchers who worked all through the night, who worked very hard and very diligently," Johnson said. "When they would come in in the wee hours of the morning, they looked beat, and then they'd turn around and go back out. When they got tired, several of them slept on concrete slab or in their vehicles. This morning, we kind of started getting fresh folks in and we kind of ramped that back up since we had daylight, and unfortunately we found him deceased."

Johnson said details surrounding the toddler's disappearance weren't yet available, but that the child wandered from his home.

Fell into an old septic tank. AND DIED.
I don’t understand why folks can’t show the common sense to fill old tanks or wells with rock and gravel when these things are abandoned.
Had one of each on my property when I bought the place 20 years ago.
One old 48 inch concrete well about 30 feet deep, and one old rotted out iron septic tank where the old house was.
Had both of them filled with rock and gravel up to the existing grade first thing.
Cost about 250 bucks to do both; that’s a whole lot better than having your dogs, livestock, or God forbid, a kid fall into them.

Thanks for the info-—I’m a city girl and don’t have a clue about such things.
