On August 22, Howes large army landed on Long Island, hoping to capture New York City and gain control of the Hudson River, a victory that would divide the rebellious colonies in half. On August 27, the Red Coats marched against the Patriot position at Brooklyn Heights, overcoming the Americans at Gowanus Pass and then outflanking the entire Continental Army.
Howe failed to follow the advice of his subordinates and storm the redoubts at Brooklyn Heights, and on August 29 General Washington ordered a brilliant retreat to Manhattan by boat, thus saving the Continental Army from capture. At the Battle of Brooklyn, the Americans suffered 1,000 casualties to the British loss of only 400 men. On September 15, the British captured New York City.

Although PBS, it actually was/is an excellent series with little if any liberal bias. There are two other such series, one titled “The American Revolution”, the other, simply, “The Revolution”. They are probably on YouTube and/or DailyMotion as well.
Huzzah! for the Old Line State.
It irks me about “400”. When I read multiple histories of the RevWar it varied from 200 to 400, often agreed as closer to 300. Just like the Spartans, and was thus often referenced.
By most histories only 9 MDers remained after 5-6 bayonet charges against Germans and Scots. Stirling was captured because he waa compromised, not because he just gave up.
They used to be legendary.
Now most ignore e RevWar.
MDers were unquestionably the best troops of the rebellion.
Your cousin? Wow.
I think Camden is perhaps much worse.
Pustering fool Gates ran away.
Washington chose to believe the wrong reports.
But ultimately the manner inwhich troops conducted themselves in the Philly campaign would push the French into officially helping. (”Saratoga” is overrated as the reason for French involvement.)
thanks for that, as a Maryland come here on the shore, many of the fighting men were from the land of pleasant living...

Thanks again, glad this new computer’s got lots of HD space!
It was the beginning of the long retreat to Trenton. During which the chaff of the summer soldiers was winnowed out from the true patriots.
Definitely check out episode 3 when you can. It deals with the Battle of Brooklyn/Battle of Long Island.

Good point, I did say perhaps. Brooklyn was awful.
Thanks for the ping, this was a very interesting article!
You are welcome.
How did you come across this (exactly) two year old ping? Have you been spending time in the WayBack Machine? :-)
I seriously thought this thread was from yesterday and not two years ago.
