When Top Gear brought together the latest Audi R8 V10 Plus, Porsche 911 Turbo S, McLaren 570S and Nissan GT-R on a runway, they must have guessed that the former acceleration king doesn't have a chance against the younger breed. The GT-R is almost a decade old now, and despite having 565 horses and all-wheel drive, it's been proven that even a GT3 RS can beat it both in a straight line and around the bends. It's also the cheapest car of the lot, so fair is fair.
On paper, the Audi R8 V10 Plus should demolish a McLaren 570S in a drag race, packing almost 50 more horsepower and all-wheel drive. But having driven both the 570S and its softer brother, the 570GT, there's one thing I can tell you: when the boost of that 3.8 V8 comes on, you better be pointing forward. These entry-level McLarens might not be as savage as a 675LT or as fast around the track as a 650S with its more advanced suspension, but they aren't running on Diet Coke either.
Up until now, no matter how much money you spent, it was almost impossible to find something that can make a 580 horsepower 911 Turbo S sweat. The Porsche's got a fast PDK gearbox, a smart all-wheel drive system and all the power you could ever ask for. The rear-(mid) engined layout also helps it off the line, and that's exactly why it can reach sixty-two miles per hour 0.4 seconds faster than the rear-wheel drive McLaren 570S, stopping the clock at 2.7 seconds.

Stupid tiny piece of metal and plastic cost me $100, but at least it wasn't the hundreds I expected to have to fork over to get the A/C system leak tested and repaired.
Can I ask what you do for a living?
Way back when my Mustang GT only had 200 horsepower and it was nearly too much to handle.
3.8 V6 ? Reminds me of the Nobles.
And I would buy a Noble. twin turbo 3.8, H pattern shifter.
And for $40-$60k too.
The BMW I8 is a neat car.
Neat. But no manuals. I still find an automatic transmission in an exotic to be an insult.
It’s like performing in a marathon to win - Only you hate the idea of running.
Am I the only one here who thinks these cars look ugly as sh!t ?
As speed goes up, the basic shape and style of the vehicle gets a lot more limited by aerodynamics. Add the limitations of seating location for realistically seeing on actual streets and and the mid-engine location and they do all look the same. They can’t help it.
The new automatics can shift much faster than any human being.
You might find destroying the engine of a supercar by mistaken shifting exhilarating, but manufacturers do not. Nor do they relish amateur drivers being forced to take a hand off the wheel at high speed.
There are plenty of antique opportunities, and some modern ones, for gleefully rowing your own.
I have a 1979 Corvette L-82. It was great in its day but you are right. When driving, it is pay attention time as if you get in trouble it won’t save your behind.
Killjoy. (In event that you forgot the sarcasm tag)
This will nail the opposition at urban stoplights.
I bought my CLA 250 a little over a year ago - when I take it in for a periodic bath, and to munch on free muffins and drink free cappuccino, I wander the floor and the lot looking for my next one - finances won't let me get one of the "real" Mercedes for $200K, but they have some very respectable options for under $70K - I'll keep mine for a couple more years as it's a blast to drive, but wil want some sort of upgrade.
So let me get this straight. The Porsche is faster accelerating to 60 but the McLaren becomes faster at higher speeds and is quicker to 100. In conclusion it all depends on which range of speed you want to be faster accelerating in. Legal or illegal.
It’s all about appreciation of a fine mechanical device. I’ve had dirt and road bikes, fast cars ( nothing compared to these), tractors, dozers, and bobcats. I find something to marvel at in every one of them.
I drive for the same reason I motorcycle for the same reason I mt. bike. For the please of act, not for the destination. I'm lucky enough to have collected a variety of on and offload vehicles and to have retired before the age or 50 so as to be able to enjoy taking them from point A to point A via the long route.
“Am I the only one here who thinks these cars look ugly as sh!t ?”
I don’t find them very visually appealing. Adding insult to injury, when I did an image search to look at one, it seemed the most predominant color was something that resembles candy corn orange. To each his own I guess.
The key is the tires. A fair amount of these cars come with various grades of ultra performance summer tires. Some of those tires turn into racing slicks after several thousand miles. Hit something like gravel or standing water on a curve and around you go..
The old saying is still true:
Just because a man drives a Ferrari it does not make him a Ferrari driver.
On my Mercedes C300 4-Matic I have two sets of wheels for summer tires and winter tires. I live in the Colorado Rockies so the conditions always change. My summer tires are wider than stock and the tires are Michelin Pilot Super Sport. They are almost slicks so I have to go slower than usual in rain. Yesterday we had a front come through and heavy rain. There was water flowing across the road in spots and sand/gravel washed across the road. I had no trouble because I know that happens here and don’t push my luck.
