Let them take the car; your health is more important! Sometimes you don't have a choice. A friend of mine was slowing to a stop at a stop sign, when a black man ran to the door, opened it and yanked my friend out of his seat into the road. Then the thief drove away. No choice for my friend to decide anything. Driving one second; the next second seeing his car leave him behind. Another time when I was younger, my mom and sister were walking back to my mom's car in front of a store, only to see a black man stealing it, pulling out of the parking spot. My mom ran towards the car, and the perp almost ran her over. Car recovered later with minor damage, fixed by insurance.

Give up the car, it isn't worth losing your life or getting injured.

He left the keys in the ignition while he was out of the car?

Unthinkable.

I know someone who saved his own life ignoring an armed carjacker's demands.
The thug walked-up to his driver's side window and tapped on the glass with the muzzle of his small-caliber pistol.
My friend had a "sixth sense" he would be shot by the criminal if he exited, so he just floored the accelerator and leaned his body towards the passenger seat.
The thug responded by shooting at the sedan that moments earlier he was trying to carjack!
My friend escaped unharmed except for a few small bullet holes in his vehicle. Criminal was not caught.

We as a nation are seeing and will continue to see an uptick of carjackings, versus car thefts, for cars are becoming too technical to steal via the old methods. Car dealerships are getting hid hard because the usual feral suspects are breaking in, going right to the key box (they know where it is, because they are the lovely miscreants the dealership hired) and steal as many cars as they have homies with them. Then they go out and commit all manner of crimes.

Carjacking is a federal offense and your state hopefully has the same laws governing stand your ground and Castle Doctrine that mine does. You try to pull someone out of a care here in Missouri and they are armed, you may very well get shot.

So, in reality...

The thief stole the man’s car AND his key ring (with his car key...and his house key, and his wife’s car key, and his gun safe key, and his gym locker key, and his bicycle lock key, and maybe his business key).

One solution is real punishment for these crimes. With the leadership we have in the nation from the Federal down to the local level, forget it. No real punishment exists anywhere in the country EXCEPT for assault against Federal lives or property. Only THAT gets real punishment and it almost never happens.

How long before Americans buy the South African solution to carjacking?

I think "Thug-Roasting" would be a smash hit TV reality show.

Always lock your car and take your keys even when exiting for just a few minutes, like this guy at the mailbox. Yeah, the criminals could demand the keys, but why make it easier for them?

I always lock my car.. getting gas, putting grocery cart away after loading the car, etc.
