French set to be the world's most commonly spoken language by 2050 because of soaring population growth in sub-Saharan Africa
-Study says 750 million people will speak French as first language by 2050
-It is spoken in sub-Saharan Africa, one of the fastest growing-populations in the world
They've been defensive for decades in preserving the purity of the language of love from the threat of globalisation.
But now it seems all will have paid off for the French, whose language is set to become the world's most spoken language by 2050, thanks to growing francophone populations in sub-Saharan Africa.
While the top languages in the world today are Mandarin, English, Spanish, and Arabic, Natixis has produced figures that show French will be number one in 35 years time.
The latest projection is that French will be spoken by 750 million people by 2050, compared to 220 million people in 2010.

Yahbutt there will no longer be any HRE French left...
Funny, when I went to Paris, it seemed everybody there spoke Arabic.
What percentage is french pidgin?
Nope Chinese or Arabic, maybe Ebgkish—did I spell that right?
We, we!
I would bet not.
Primarily because populations in sub-Saharan Africa will collapse, due to disease and starvation before the area could support that kind of growth.
Mandarin will most likely be the most common language, I would not be surprised to see Spanish to be more commonly spoken than English.
English functions as the default language for the educated people in Latin America, Europe and Asia.
With 25% of the people in all those areas knowing English, English is and will be the most commonly second language.
I would not be surprised to see Spanish to be more commonly spoken than English.”
Do believe you are right on the money. All the school kids in Texas now take a Spanish class. Everywhere you go signs are in English and Spanish and more labels and signs in grocery stores are in Spanish. Turned on the AM radio the other day - most all of the stations were Spanish.
Sometimes I feel like I’m in the heart of Mexico. Would prefer French but it’s not going to happen, at least in our state.
Well the article doesn’t explain how, even at such an explosive growth rate, French speaking is supposed to overtake Mandarin Chinese (currently over one billion) or English (currently 942 million):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_languages_by_total_number_of_speakers
By 2050 the average IQ will be 57.
oooops, it said as “first” language, I was counting English speakers including it as 2nd language.
Well still, how is French supposed to overtake Mandarin Chinese? Are they expecting a collapse in the Chinese speaking population?
I know Voulez-vous coucher avec moi (ce soir)? - but it has never worked for me.
It’s approaching that now....
What would happen if foreign aid to africa were to stop?
Bingo!
Or Hindi.
OH yeah right...
Uh, people in sub Saharan Africa learn French as their second language, not their first one.
And the article ignores that most educated people in India, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, and many in sub Saharan Africa speak English as their second language.
