A story of Texas summer heat and a couple of mistakes.
Oh yeah, near death too. More or less.
There’s about 2,489 possible answers to that :)
Get something that fits you and feels comfortable to ride. Tweak that some if you want more performance. I have 8 bikes so my tastes are all over the board.
The main thing is the ride, not the steed.
You just missed the record by one post. Nice try.
I got a million of ‘em.
Stay safe FReeper.
Do you have children?
Paybacks are a motha’ :)
Oh, I own around 5 CamelBaks. No, this was just a total brain fart.
My old daddy used to tell me “Boy, you are near eat up with the dumbass” and I see no reason to call his words into question 50 years later.
That was just a whole lot of good advice you laid down brother.
Well said.
Texans aren’t supposed to die of heatstroke. They’re supposed to die on the skiing in New Mexico.
I have the equipment, I own like I think 5 CamelBaks. I was just completely over estimating my fitness versus the conditions.
I’ve learned some hard lessons over my time and a lot of them involved two wheels. I can’t count the number of times I’ve done a similar trip with only slightly better preparation. But that was 20 pounds and 20 years ago :)
Here’s the backstory to that. The place is downtown and I didn’t have my bike lock and was already crawling with paranoia. In order to make sure my bike was safe I risked having a health issue.
Getting older sucks, sometimes.
Where did you ride 72 miles off-road? That is an awesome feat.
That’s very kind of you to say, thank you!
I have some history writing, nothing big, few mag articles and stuff like that. Mostly about some form of cycling.
Interesting that mention that. I (when I don’t forget to pack it) have gotten into the habit drinking pickle juice. The Hotter’n Hell or one of the rides started me on that. I used to cramp up on long rides but thankfully only once this year. On the nastiest hill in Muenster, TX, at the Germanfest bike rally.
Sea-salt, hmmm, I am going to look into this. Mucho garcias!
You know, that is just so funny and fateful on so many levels, I’m just going to let it linger in mind for a while :)
Gotcha! That makes sense. Glad you are alive to tell the tale!
Take one tablet per 25 pounds of body weight, and you can get through the hottest days without suffering any of the common heat sickness symptoms.
I haven’t checked, but Sprouts may have them. I still buy mine by the case from a California distributor who I’ve used for decades.
