‘Star Trek’s new lead is a woman, like its best captain ever

To boldly go . . . back to 1995!

Wednesday at a Television Critics Association panel in Beverly Hills, Calif., Bryan Fuller, executive producer of “Star Trek: Discovery” (premiering in January on CBS, then airing on CBS All Access), revealed that a woman will be the new show’s main character.

But this isn’t the typical self-righteous Hollywood back-slappery that launched a thousand Medium.com essays. Nor is it the Girl Power! casting of summer’s “Ghostbusters” flop, nor the newly announced all-female “Ocean’s Eight” caper. “Star Trek” has always done diversity the right way.

True. Layer that on top, and it looks like even more of a Charlie Foxtrot.

I don’t have a problem with women leading per se, I just think combat leaders need to have combat experience as a starter, or at least experience working with combat troops in training.

And to get either of those, a person has to be in a combat unit.

And the concept of putting women into combat units as a function of logistics and unit cohesion is an unsatisfactory one, so that is why I oppose their roles as combat leaders.

In industry, I think they are fine.

Agree. And it’s stupid to take a human and put some plastic on their head or face and call them an alien.

Amen. This has become tedious for me. Virtually every alien you see on virtually every show (not just Star Trek) is some actor wearing makeup, prosthetics or a costume.

It is like they cannot conceive of any species that might exist outside of a "humanoid" shape.

Now this may be in fact a necessary characteristic of an advanced being, but if it is, that has yet to be demonstrated.

I will note that Science Fiction writers postulated Creatures based on Cats, (Man-Kizin Wars, Larry Niven) Bears, (Earthman's Burden, Gordon R. Dickenson) Winged creatures, (The Man who counts, Poul Anderson) Dogs, Insects, and so forth. (I've read such, but cannot remember the names.)

But we mostly see dressed up humans to represent "Aliens" and they all tend to speak English with no reasonable explanation as to how this might be so.

Very annoying that they have so little imagination and creativity.

And when an average woman finds herself being attacked by an average male, they realize they have been sold a bill of goods, and they cannot do everything a man can do.

I keep pointing this out to my kids. In movie after movie, in show after show, I see some trim young woman kicking a large man's @$$, and the reality could not be further away from the portrayal.

In a head to head matchup, an ordinary fit male will kick a very fit woman's @$$ 95% of the time.

Males are made for violent combat. This is why they are on average, much larger than females. This is why they have much stronger muscles and thicker bones and joints.

It is a Liberal delusion fantasy that the average female will be a match for the average male in terms of fighting, and it is a delusion that can have very seriously bad consequences for the people whom they fool into believing it.

Males have the “unfair” advantage of naturally occurring steroid injections, specifically testosterone.

There are a LOT of ramifications to that one simple sentence above.

You are correct. You see it now with an extraordinarily miniscule percentage of women who train obsessively to the highest levels possible to attain a pinnacle of female strength and fitness, and when you throw them in with a bell curve fitness grouping of men, they will perform in the lowest comparative percentiles.

Besides being at risk for pregnancy, they are prone to injuries at a far, FAR higher rate than men are, and take longer to recover. Because they have to train constantly and obsessively, any cessation of that physical training (due to injury or pregnancy) is going to remove any of those fitness advantages over the average women that they trained so hard to attain.

And these “pinnacle” women are the ones they are trying to force into combat units and advanced infantry training units where they consistently perform in the lower percentiles.

It is insanity, what we are doing. We will pay for this in blood, lost battles, and lost wars someday. And the people who made it happen will be long, long gone, living fat, dumb, and happy.

People will read this and think this is anti-female. It is nothing of the sort. It is factual. In industry, women do just fine in leadership roles in my opinion, and I have worked for great women who I would bend over backwards to fulfill whatever obligations they place on me, because they have supported me and others around me, and are worthy of that effort.

But industry is not war.

Someone else remembers Mrs. Columbo?

I remember it vaguely. It wasn't that bad, but the Columbo tie-in was a joke.

What every Star Trek since the original has missed is the fact that the original Captain was actually three characters. Kirk, Spock and McCoy were Ego, Super-Ego and Id respectively. It was the dynamic interplay between these three that was never again fully developed in any of the sequels.

This is really excellent. And so obviously true - now that you point it out, LOL!

Every once in a while (when I’m not ranting about
my personal peeves) I have a flash of insight.

It only took me 40+ years to come up with that one.
I started watching Star Trek in it’s first run.

There is no captain but a Lt Commander in this new show. The gay producer says he will also have a gay character. He also said there will be sex and adult language. The producer is another JJ Abrams knockoff who just wants to change things up. Plus CBS wants to charge you for watching the show. No way!

I have not seen any Star Trek shows after Enterprise left the air that were shows with a story as the movies are not Star Trek. They just use the name of the show and some of the character names.

Kirk was the best captain. I liked Voyager and I liked Janeway. She was tough, not too stern, and tried to be fair. She also had the strong loyalty of her crew.

They didn't make a "thing" of her being a woman. They just let her be captain.

They always have kirk space diving or defying gravity. They are trying to move the personal plots somewhat. I want to see klingons and the early encounters.

janeway was a pandering joke. The series was cancelled until resurrected with whatshername with the skin tight borg leotard.

Enterprise was SUPPOSED to be a back to the roots of the TOS. then the suits got hold of it and it died.

In the jjabramsverse (cursed be its existence) Enterprise is still cannon.

The same guy tried to put out a revamped Munsters. It was absolutely terrible. One of the worst things I’ve ever seen. The network burned it off for Halloween, but it would have been a travesty to take it to series.

A Lt. Commander? That’s Spock’s rank, a first officer. What happened to the captain?

I totally agree .. gave up looking for a person to share a life with .. they’re either a cheater or a beater .. and if neither of those, then a push-over, cowardly, whiner.

Yuk.
