Which state has the worst drivers in the U.S.?
CBS News ^ | 8/8/2016 | Ed Leefeldt

When you get cut off, stuck behind a slow poke in the passing lane or see someone whizzing by at 90 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone, it's tradition to check the license plate and say, "No wonder--they're from such-and-such state."

Now there's a study that gives credence to that claim.(snip)

Here's a list of the worst, and the reasons why:

1. Florida. Floridians Google "speeding tickets" and "traffic tickets" more than any other state. They also have the second lowest number of insured drivers in the nation.

2. Mississippi. The state had the fifth-highest number of deaths resulting from auto accidents and the 12th highest rate of DUI arrests per driver in the country. Like Florida, relatively few people are insured.

3. Oklahoma. When it comes to states with many uninsured drivers, Oklahoma has more than its fair share: Only 74 percent of its drivers are insured. It also has one of the 15 worst scores in DUIs per thousand drivers and the number of people killed per thousand drivers in auto accidents.

4. New Jersey. The Garden State has the second-most deaths per driver.

5. Delaware. New Jersey's neighbor and rival for worst drivers in the mid-Atlantic region, Delaware is the only state with more deaths per driver than New Jersey.

6. Alabama. This state has bad scores all around.

7. Vermont. It leads the nation in DUIs per driver with 50 per thousand drivers.

8. Tennessee. The state is one of the least insured states in the country, with 20 percent of drivers not having car insurance. Tennessee also has the 18th highest number of deaths per thousand drivers.

9. Texas. It has the highest percentage of deaths from drunk driving at 40 percent.

10. Nevada. Nevada is the third-worst state for traffic and speeding tickets, as well as being the 17th worst state for DUIs.

I can't tell you about drivers, but I can tell you that Pennsylvania has the worst roads in the nation.

Yes on that! Matched only by Southfield, Michigan in my experience, and that is not the whole state.

I don't know if Illinois drivers are the worst, but I just wish they would stay out of Missouri.

It's almost a guarantee when you get behind or alongside an Illinois driver, they will soon do something stupid.

Rhode Island drivers are definitely among the worst.

Rhode Island only exists to be used in size comparisons to other places... Such as Harding County, New Mexico is twice the size of Rhode Island (and only has 698 residents).

No where have I seen drivers completely ignore every traffic control signal, traffic sign and lane markings like I did in Rome. They don’t even try.

Virginia...although it’s amazing that you see a lot of Florida drivers up here for perspective, but I have never seen so many single car accidents anywhere other than VA. That and they don’t like to turn their headlights on!

I moved a few years ago from Michigan to Maryland. Maryland drivers are horrible, but at least they drive fast. Fifteen over the speed limit is about average. Detroit area drivers are fast, aggressive and good.

Turn signals are a sign of weakness and it’s not really tailgating unless the bumpers are touching.

When I lived in a western suburb of Chicago, one of my rules for staying alive on the roads was: If you see a sports car that is approaching from any direction, and it is painted either black or red, prepare to take evasive action to avoid an accident.

Eastern Virginia has the worst snow drivers. They don’t get enough to learn the right habits.

Ah yes the Maryland tailgater. Famous throughout the I-95 corridor.

Think about the mindset of somebody who drives with a handicapped tag hanging from their rear view mirror.

I can understand hanging it when one is parked, driving with it indicates they are impaired.

If they are impaired, they shouldn’t be driving.

The worst goddamned drivers in the country are in Miami, followed by Chinatown, NYC.

At least the Chinese, due to their lack of peripheral vision, have an excuse.

“Had a driver in Rome tell me that Romans are the second craziest drivers. He said the worst are in Naples.”

It’s a toss up.

Imho.

I remember being in a shuttle van going from PIT airport to the hotel via the freeway. Hit a huge pothole at freeway speed; folded the front wheel nicely under the van.

That’s odd, I did a lot of business in the Chicago area in the 90’s, and never had a problem at all. It was the only really big city in which I didn’t mind driving. Very polite, patient drivers, even on the Kennedy Expressway into downtown.

Maybe because you didn’t come to western Pennsylvania. We are like the red-headed step child due to the politics of Philadelphia and Harrisburg. We are always last in line for road repairs and pothole patching.

Turn signals are a sign of weakness

In California, one way to see what kind of acceleration someone's car is capable of is to signal a lane change into the space in front of them.

It's true. They are maniacs. And yet on foot they stroll along at a snail's pace.
