FWICS, the ping syllable 平 was a different word that meant “flat (land)” or “pacified (land, as conquered)” rather than “capital” or jing 京. This was not of the British. And that’s aside from the different languages of the region, not all mutually intelligible (e.g. “Bak-ging” in Cantonese for the same city).
