I wouldn’t say it’s too late for him. How I would turn it around:

I still say he should apologize to the mother. There is no winning that battle, and his holdout will not net him any votes.

Second, he has to get ads on TV. It’s the only way to expose Hillary and get around the media coverage. There are plenty of people out there who only get their info from the news or what they hear on social media. That’s not good. This is a way to reach them.

Third, stay on message. I say his advisors and he need to come up with a framework of talking points for each rally. Put on there the latest media lies that need rebutting, the latest attacks on Hillary, and the policy. Make sure to hit those points. Don’t give them anything.

Fourth, at least until all this cools down, stay away from the media for a few weeks. Don’t give them anything they can possibly use. They are looking for a sentence fragment at this point.

He is just going to have to cautious of what he says because we can’t afford anymore Judge Curiel, Heidi retweet, Kahn family business. We are three months out, and another one of those “scandals” prior to the election will be a problem.

I think it's best that he just drop the subject. He should never have gotten into the whole question of what sacrifices he made, let alone why the mother didn't speak - he should have taken the offensive by talking about the prevalence of Muslim terrorism vs the sacrifice of this one soldier - but it's over and it should stay over. There's no good that can be accomplished by bringing it up again.

To apologize is to admit that what they said was true and what he said was false - neither of which is true. Unless, of course, he was issuing one of those leftist non-apologies apologies. The last thing I would do is cede that ground.

A better strategy is to hit back on the phony manufactured nature of the Khan-con - preferably through surrogates.
