OH NO! How awful for you.
Everybody knew and loved my Henrietta, so she was never in danger..finally passed away of old age, I guess. Had her for years.
Everyone in the family grew to love Henrietta. I think she must have finally passed from old age. We had her for years.
Mine were good laying hens so they weren’t fated for the pot...
However, one day just before I got home from school, Mom said to Dad “Go get a chicken so I can cook one for dinner. Don’t get Nana’s one”
So Dad goes into our big chicken yard and a hen crouches down near him “That’s Matilda” he thought and grabbed another one near him.
What my Dad didn’t realize was there was at least 3 that would crouch down and so he accidently grabbed my Matilda and had her head screwed and she was hanging upside down from the clothes line when I got home...
I couldn’t find Matilda and there was a nice fat chicken hanging on the line...surely not ???
But alas it was...
By that time she was an older hen so Mom stewed her along with nice veggies from Dad’s garden...
I was excused from eating dinner that night but my cannibalistic family dug in with gusto...
Unfortunately I could smell her all over the house as I cried on my bed...
My Dad was crestfallen that he had grabbed the wrong chicken but not heart broken enough to forgo dinner !!!
:(
No disrespect, but guys are hardwired like that...
What a sad story though.
I blame their enemies, the Devolved Order of Blue Men.

Wow, that's unexpected. Farm animal stories are always so depressing, except to people from farms, who just shrug and start talking about the circle of life. Yeah, I'm not a vegetarian, but I don't think about where my shoe leather came from every time I lace up, either.
Good for Henrietta.
The disaster was in the New Zealand papers on August 3...
heres the New Zealand Herald...

bump
Years later my mother admitted that she was good eating...tender and juicy...
:(
Well that was a mean thing to say, IMO.
Not really my mother was one of those who told you the truth...
What a coincidence, I had a pet named Henrietta also! However, mine was a white duck. My sister brought home a young duckling from a friend's farm, and I raised it. Named it Henry. Until it grew up and laid eggs everywhere in the yard. I took Henrietta everywhere with me, on walks to the park. Other kids were envious. Things were good for a few years until my Dad's dogs had a litter of pups, and the mother dog killed my duck when it got too close to the pups.
And it’s a real thing, too. Interestingly, the Ladies Auxiliary is called the Order of Pocahontas.
Interesting...
The Colonial Dames look after the grave of Pocahontas in England...
Many couples on the dead and injured lists with most of the victims from the town of Bridgeton. To get an idea of what the injured faced watch the “Knick” tv series.
Interesting look at a slice of life in a bygone era.
Good price. Excellent bargain. When will freepmail have a slot for transporting monies? :)
