The confrontation between O'Neal and the officers happened about 7:30 p.m. Thursday after officers tried to stop O'Neal as he drove a Jaguar that had reportedly been stolen in Bolingbrook. As O'Neal drove north in the 7400 block of South Merrill Avenue, he struck a responding police SUV and a parked car, police sources told the Tribune. Two officers opened fire as O'Neal continued into the 7300 block of Merrill. O'Neal then collided with another police SUV, causing significant damage, and fled from the car. A third officer chased him and shot him behind a nearby residence, the sources said.
O'Neal, of the 1700 block of East 70th Street, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he died shortly after 9 p.m.

I remember when it wasn't necessary because the suspect didn't run.
He supposedly did not drive away. If he did drive away, he would still be in possession of a deadly weapon - the car. In this example he used the car as a deadly weapon so his continued use of the vehicle would suggest he is still a lethal danger. But the article says he fled on foot. In that example, he discarded the weapon. In either case I hardly believe that a reply comment on a website is symptomatic of “the problem”.
That is the question. His weapon was the car. If he was in the car I would think he still represented a danger as he showed his willingness to use the car in an act of lethal force. But he abandoned the car and fled on foot. The weapon was abandoned.

1. I once shot a deer at about 100 yards. I was shooting at his heart. By the time the bullet impacted, the bullet hit him in the butt. My dad made me spend the next 4 hours tracking him. So, do we know that the cop was shooting at his back?
2. In the cops mind, the human being moving around in front of him and in the dark had used a lethal weapon (car) in a lethal way just seconds earlier. So, his adrenalin was bound to be maxed out at the second he pulled the trigger. Would any normal person have waited around 3, 4, 5 or 6 seconds to make sure the guy, who was in the dark, would not start firing any second, or any split second? Would you have waited?
Most of us would not. We need more facts. And, the cops need the benefit of the doubt. Without them, we have nothing between us and the criminals.
