A United States 'spy plane' has made an emergency landing in eastern Russia, it has emerged today.
The surveillance Boeing OC-135B aircraft was flying a mission over Siberia as allowed under the Treaty on Open Skies when it reported a problem with its landing gear.
The unarmed plane made an emergency landing at Khabarovsk airport, but a military source in Russia has questioned whether the technical glitch was genuine.

I call Bullshit..Why would the status of the landing gear be an issue while cruising at altitude? If they had a problem, why continue into Russian airspace? Gear problems are an issue during takeoff and landing..not cruise. Fly to Osan or Tokyo to burn fuel, manually lower the gear and land..Who in the hell is making decisions these days?

Are we the only two people on this thread who know what “Open Skies” means?

So what you are saying is that because of the malfunction of landing gear and the need to emergency land more than 1000 miles away...Russia can look at all data as per the Treaty????
This whole things sounds fishy.

You may be the only two. It is not something I had heard of before.
Maybe a pilot can chime in and tell is if stuck landing gear would have required them to emergency land as they did 1600 miles away.

“Maybe the landing gear were stuck in the down position. Doesnt that make it hard to fly?”
It would increase drag and thus fuel consumption and reduce range, and maybe create other problems due to having the gear doors open.

Assume one of those two things happened. Was there another course of action that could have been taken rather than land where Putin gets access to all the info

Something fishy here.
When would a crew find ‘landing gear problem’, and what is the normal sop for such ‘emergency’?

Maybe the landing gear were stuck in the down position. Doesnt that make it hard to fly?Not as hard as flying long distances with multiple engines out which is what they are required to be capable of.
