Assistant Prosecutor Michael Taylor asked the court to send the case to trial, noting that Everidge admitted he went to Kentucky and picked up and brought back cans he knew could not be returned for money in Michigan.

According to Michigans Beverage Containers Act, a person cannot return or attempt to return to a dealer a beverage container the person knows was not purchased in Michigan as a filled returnable container. Anyone attempting to return 10,000 or more nonreturnable containers can be found guilty of a felony that is punishable by up to five years in prison and/or a fine not to exceed $5,000.
Of all the states with bottle bills, Michigan has the highest refund value, according to statistics from the Container Recycling Institute.
California has a 10 cent refund on bottles that are 24 ounces or larger while anything smaller is 5 cents. Maine's and Vermonts bottle bills provide 15 cents on liquor bottles and 5 cents on all beverages except dairy products and unprocessed cider, the CRI noted.

Actually, I agree.
I have never heard that this was illegal.
The bottle says it’s worth “X” in a certain state.
So, on its face, it appears you are helping that state meet its incentive.
LOL!
When we put out our recycling bins, all the aluminum cans were gone in an hour. (!)
“I didnt know bottle deposits were still around. They have deposits on plastic bottles?”
This was supposed to be a Green-thing. Many states and even local communities have put a “deposit” on items ranging from plastic bags to bottles and cans. In reality it is a tax since most people throw them away. Like everything the Left does it is a money-grabbing scheme.
What was Bottle Man’s intent ? Saving the planet would be my defense.
It's 10 cents....
and they say “Capitalism” doesn't work!...Did the Govt. hire these people?...No!!!..people will do whats in their own best interest...
The program appears to work, you hardly ever see a can or bottle littering the roadways.
Government is the greediest, most corrupt and murderous force on Earth. It’s not even debatable.
Yet some people still have a religious faith in government.
He’s safe. he didn’t intend to actually turn them in for money.
Great use of tax money. /sarc
Hell, now everything is illegal and racists if certain people do it or say it.
I respectfully disagree. The history of the Michigan law and debate shows the intent of the law was to protect the environment by reducing waste and litter, protecting the environment, and encouraging companies that manufacture recycled products to locate in Michigan.
If Michign was sincere about the intent then they should encourage people from anywhere to return recycled bottles to Michigan. While the first part of the intent, reducing litter, does not apply to bottles from outside the state the remaining goals are met.
Does the state not force companies to spend billions to reduce pollutants that otherwise would go by air to other states?
Buy 10 cases of cheap soda pop at $2 per case with your EBT card. Dump the pop down the drain. Return 240 cans @ 10¢ per can. You earn a gross of $24.00, with a $4 profit. (No tax on EBT purchases) That $24 will buy you a bottle of cheap liquor, two packs of smokes and enough left over to buy you and your sweetie dinner at McDonalds that evening.
Repeat tomorrow. Life is good.
We did that too, soda bottles were 5 cents each, and the grocery store would give us the refund, and that is how we 4 kids got our candy money that we then spent at the same grocery store. To poor for an allowance or the extra for candy bars otherwise. Then the state caught on, and would only refund when you bought more soda. Indiana same time frame.
Now I’ve a big bowl of beer/soda can tabs 2 year collection, waiting for some one who collects for St. Jude’s to have them. They make more money off the tab than the cans. Cans can be taken to the Animal Shelter for recycle for dog/cat food.
Our government? The USA?! Seriously, you gotta get get a grip.
Okay, I don’t want to belabor the discussion, rather, focus on Clinton and Trump, killing Islam, etc. But if my state decided that reducing litter and increasing recycle was worthwhile endeavor—and I lived in many states with bottle deposits (growing up in Idaho, my brother and I collected many for candy money), then why should my state suffer someone corrupting our effort by importing their recycling from another state? These are not money making efforts. The state collects fee for bottles sold in the state, the refund fee for bottles returned, they pay taxes to support the effort. The result is less litter and more recycling. Now, you bring in bottles by the truck load, claiming refunds. Well you never paid deposits, you never paid into this system. Why should you take money from that pool of funds, maybe even from the state taxpayers. Whether you agree with bottle deposits or not, doing so is fraud and theft. It is simply not right.
