Is Donald Trump Having The "Happy Gilmore" Effect On The GOP?

I was out a short time ago running some errands and had The Chris Plante Radio Show on. Plante was talking to somebody at the Republican Convention and he said after three days of being there that he was seeing people there as attendees and guests that just were not his kind of people.

I took that to mean this guy was GOP establishment, he did not like Trump and he certainly did not like the people Trump has brought into the party. You see they were "Not his sort of people". Interpret that however you would like, but my take was that he was unhappy that his kind of snobbish, elitist country club Republican was not there and calling the shots. I am sure this fellow would have been more happy with Jeb Bush or someone like him as the nominee.

Well as soon as I heard his comments I thought about the 1996 movie comedy "Happy Gilmore" starring Adam Sadler as the hockey player turned golf pro. One of the aspects of his unlikely stardom as a professional golfer was that he attracted more working class types to the tournaments and upset the staid game of golf as exhibited by actor Christopher MacDonald playing Shooter McGavin.

Well to a great degree Donald Trump has done the same thing to the GOP. He has pulled in all types of people to the party, those that have not voted, those enraged by the political corruption, and etc., etc..

People that have made the trip to the RNC as delegates are those who a year ago would not even have thought about going. Yet here we have a revolution in the making with people from all walks of like that are excited about the prospects.

Donald Trump, if he has done nothing else, has helped expose the absolute and total corruption of both political parties and also infused a great number of people to get engaged by giving them a hope they did not have one year ago.

So in this I see Trump as the Happy Gilmore of politics.

I’ve been on here since 2000. Vanity posts except as a rare exception have been frowned upon. And lately there is getting to be too many of them. As the infection spreads, FR becomes just another chat board.

It is easy to find a thread where you can post your comment without mucking up the directory with vanity posts. Or, you can do like others have done (now also abused) and create a page of your own and then link to your own insightful comments.

Anyhow, not trying to sound harsh. Just my plea to save the vanity posts for very, very rare occasions when you can’t find anywhere else to insert your thought.

Wrestling analogy is a good one. Don’t overlook that Trump and Vince McMahon are friends and both excel at promotion. I’ll never forget seeing Trump shave Vince’s head after beating him.

Allowing Cruz to speak last night was aimed at one thing, VIEWERS! Cruz, endorse or don’t, wasn’t really a primary consideration for Trump. He knew that question was a ratings draw and no matter what Cruz did, and he could come in at the last moment and claim the attention of a large audience.

I agree. He also used the convention to put his kids “over” in wrestle speak. The news wants to interview all of them. They will be a united front against Hillary.

Hillary is going to be turned into the biggest “heel” the nation has ever seen.

“It will make the DNC look like a pity party.”

That, and the bar scene from Star Wars.

Great analogy, I can remember those themes being played up when watching TV-rasslin’ as a kid in the 60s. Didn’t watch it after I grew up, but I remember a few bad-guys redeeming themselves into the Hero scenarios back in the day.

Putting it on my “to watch” list, sounds like a good movie.

Caddyshack had that same kind of vibe.

Listening to Trump’s speech now.....sounds like he has learned to make a political speech (like when Happy Gilmore learned to putt).
