Is Donald Trump Having The "Happy Gilmore" Effect On The GOP?
Self | 07-21-2016 | Captain Peter Blood

I was out a short time ago running some errands and had The Chris Plante Radio Show on. Plante was talking to somebody at the Republican Convention and he said after three days of being there that he was seeing people there as attendees and guests that just were not his kind of people.

I took that to mean this guy was GOP establishment, he did not like Trump and he certainly did not like the people Trump has brought into the party. You see they were "Not his sort of people". Interpret that however you would like, but my take was that he was unhappy that his kind of snobbish, elitist country club Republican was not there and calling the shots. I am sure this fellow would have been more happy with Jeb Bush or someone like him as the nominee.

Well as soon as I heard his comments I thought about the 1996 movie comedy "Happy Gilmore" starring Adam Sadler as the hockey player turned golf pro. One of the aspects of his unlikely stardom as a professional golfer was that he attracted more working class types to the tournaments and upset the staid game of golf as exhibited by actor Christopher MacDonald playing Shooter McGavin.

Well to a great degree Donald Trump has done the same thing to the GOP. He has pulled in all types of people to the party, those that have not voted, those enraged by the political corruption, and etc., etc..

People that have made the trip to the RNC as delegates are those who a year ago would not even have thought about going. Yet here we have a revolution in the making with people from all walks of like that are excited about the prospects.

Donald Trump, if he has done nothing else, has helped expose the absolute and total corruption of both political parties and also infused a great number of people to get engaged by giving them a hope they did not have one year ago.

So in this I see Trump as the Happy Gilmore of politics.

Please feel free to comment. I took delight in hearing that fellow on Plate's show talk about the kind of people at the convention. It seems Trump has been successful in driving out so many of the Hypocritical, Mendacious GOP Elitists that have done so much damage to this country.

On the one hand yes, Trump is expanding and broadening the participation level. However, most delegates are not casual new joiners. They have worked their way to that position. The transition has been building over the years because of the non-responsive behavior of the GOPe. Trump met up with a building movement, he did not create the movement.

I like that, you are not raising Trump to high upon a pedestal, while at the same time explaining the Trump phenomena. Someone a lot of normal Americans can appreciate.

If they want our votes down-ticket, then they better make room under their fancy tent. Oh, and get us some of those fancy snacks, and a glass of bubbly please.

I agree, Trump was in the right place and right time to reap and ride the Whirlwind.

Duly noted. But we can have a little fun and some analysis can’t we?

I have a guilty pleasure. I watch professional wrestling. Professional wrestling, especially the WWE are masters of promotion.

The Trump campaign resembles a wrestling promotion. Running against the “establishment” or the “Authority” as WWE calls it, is a common theme.

Trump is playing the role of anti-hero. He’s not totally clean, a little abnouxious and will do just about anything to win against all odds.

There are two main types of wrestlers, One is called the “Baby Face” or “Face” and the other is called the “Heal”. Most wrestlers gravitate between the two as they get more popular.

Trump needs a heal as a rub. Last night he turned Ted Cruz into a heal. Cruz came in to a roaring cheer and left to boos. Trump’s entrance at the end of his speech was planned.

This RNC convention is like Wrestlemania on steroids. Last night is a setup for tonight. People are going to be glued to the TV. Ratings through the roof.
It will make the DNC look like a pity party.

Good analogy - Trump also finally exposed Cruz as a unreliable egotistical liar who touts his “my word is my bond” qualities even as he unabashedly breaks his bond.

“Trump met up with a building movement, he did not create the movement.”

You are absolutely correct. Trump figured it out and continues to foster it in most all things he does.

Smart marketing, catch the trend and ride it.

A lot of “conservatives” want a BIG TENT with lots of empty space so it doesn’t feel crowded and they don’t have to deal with anyone who disagrees with them on anything.

It’s not about getting a diverse group of people to together to beat Hillary. It’s about converting the country to all of their views and if they have to compromise we need to get Hillary to prove that it’s their way or Ds so we all need to submit to them next election or else.

Watch a movie called “Just Tell Me What You Want”. Trump is most like the main character Max Herchel played by Alan King. Great movie and what fun.
