UPDATE: Purdue Now Says It Won’t Expel Student Who Criticized Black Lives Matter

By Heat Street Staff | 7:11 pm, July 13, 2016 Purdue University this afternoon has issued a statement in the case of a student allegedly threatened with expulsion — and definitely the recipient of death threats — for criticizing Black Lives Matter on Facebook.

Joshua Nash, a biology major who is gay and refers to himself as a “dangerous faggot” in his Twitter bio (a reference to conservative commentator Milo Yiannopoulos) was summoned to a mandatory “Administrative Meeting” after a student reported a posting of his made on Facebook. According to Nash, the Facebook posting was to the effect that “Black Lives Matter is trash because they do not really care about black lives. They simply care about making money and disrupting events for dead people.”

Nash says that when he called the university administration for clarification about this hearing, he was told he could face consequences for his posting up to and including expulsion.

Another Big Brother liberal "educational" institution.

wtf, a "mandatory administrative meeting" simply because he expressed a cultural/political opinion online??!!!??

This is outrageous, and the administration's climb-down stance that they just want to "support" him is asinine and dishonest. Ofc they want to pressure and intimidate him, and gather any material they can use against him.

He would be crazy to cooperate with this interrogation session known as a "mandatory administrative meeting".... it is not in his interest to cooperate with these bureaucratic scumbags.

College campuses have become hellholes of un-freedom.

Anyone who steps out of the politically correct line is a target.

The student should definitely get in touch with the “FIRE” organization if he hasn’t already.... college administrators and faculty can NEVER be trusted to defend the rights and freedoms of conservatives nowadays, sad to say. There is no telling what kind of trouble this kid will end up in if he says “the wrong thing” around any of these libtard Commisars.

Any intelligent parent, and prospective student, would investigate any prospective university and find out whether it practices this kind of Stalinism.

Oddly, the President of Purdue is former Republican Governor Mitch Daniels

I assume Daniels is learning about this now, but he may have very limited influence. College administrations are layered with politically correct liberal bureaucrats, and short of firing the relevant dean(s) (which may well be the appropriate next step) Daniels is pretty isolated from the day to day actions and policies of various deans. It will take heroic, determined efforts for Daniels to hope to change this sort of problem... let’s see if he has it in him.

They’re doing the Soviet “we’re worried that your mentally ill” attack.

YUP, their idea of “support” is to treat the student as mentally deviant and try to coax him into treatment. Meanwhile, they gather as much info as they can, and if he is unfortunate enough to make any unguarded comments to them or if they pick up on any imperfections at all in his life, he can expect to be viciously raked over the coals at any time.

He should transfer to another school. I would have lost confidence in the administration to do what is right for all it’s students. Very likely, the only reason he has not been already ousted is because of all the publicity. For just a minute or two, Purdue realizes how foolish they look. For just a minute or two. Yielding with rapid compliance to bully groups as the BLM is still the administrations first default position.

It may already be difficult for him to transfer. It is late to apply for fall term, plus he will need references etc. Any new college may be wary of him based on the publicity etc. He’s not in a good predicament, all for uttering some harmless (and sensible) remark about BLM.

Somehow that makes it even more believable. Isn’t Mitch Daniels the one whose wife convinced him not to run on the ticket as VP? True, a campaign life is not for every family, but Mitch gave the impression of being sort of henpecked to begin with.

at 50 I to appear before a school disciplining board I would arrive with a tape recorder inform them that I was recording. listen to what they had to say when they got done pontificating I would hand them the business card of my lawyer and just walk out with out saying anything. if they took any action I would sue. it is none of there dam business what I believe or what I post as long as I am not harassing a specific student or making threats of violence. You engage with theses people as little as possible because they will twist what ever you say especially if you have conservative beliefs.

I wonder if his facebook didn’t have “DANGEROUS FAGGOT” written by himself on it, if he would have had no chance of not being expelled.

Ah, I’ll take the fruit vote if we can get it.

Gay Marriage is a SC decision so there is no reason for them to vote dem anymore. But a lot will. Or maybe not.

Absolutely, this student faces only dangers from interacting with this Soviet administration in any way. He should get good legal advice immediately (FIRE will provide same for free), and not attend any meeting at all.... or if he does attend he should say nothing but “I am here to listen.” They are looking for any and every way to fry his butt now. He is in peril and needs to trust no one except expert legal advisors who are on HIS team.

But he's gay - an untouchable. So if he goes in there with the right lawyer, who can hook up their accusations of mental illness with his homosexuality, he can walk out with everything he needs for a slam dunk lawsuit.

A conservative gay will never be invulnerable to these Commisars. They will not hesitate to wreck his life if they can.

In face, “conservative” gay/black/hispanic/woman etc. is a bright red flag waving in front of the leftist Commisars. They absolutely hate it when any of their favorite “protected” groups get out of line. The academic left is absolutely scathing against people who fail to understand their “best interests” according to the left.

All it takes to rein in the public colleges is having the state governments taking back control. Think you have tenure? You don’t if tenure doesn’t exist if the laws says that it doesn’t. Any larger program set up by a government can be undone by the next government.. Laws regarding hiring and firing, retirement and public employee rights are not a contract and the only way a government can be forced to do something is through the political process, bribery and/or war.

Problem is that academic “accreditation” agencies insist upon the sanctity of tenure, and a lot is given up if a college were to lose accreditation. It can still operate of course, but a lot of opportunities for students, graduates, and faculty may not exist from an unaccredited college. Just for example, most graduate and professional schools may not seriously consider applicants from an unaccredited institution. There would be a ton of “revenge” actions from all over academe to any institutions which gave up tenure and thus accreditation.
