A federal judge Monday ordered the Multnomah County sheriff's office to return Ammon Bundy to the downtown Portland jail, so he can be housed near his brother Ryan Bundy as they prepare a joint defense in the pending Oregon standoff case.
Calling the federal conspiracy case against the Bundy's and their co-defendants an "exceptional case" and the Bundy's ties an "exceptional relationship" U.S. District Judge Robert E. Jones issued the order after a morning hearing.
While county jail officials prefer not to house the co-defendants together, the judge said he had the authority to make an "exception" to the jail's rules. Ammon Bundy has been moved last week from the downtown jail to Inverness Jail in Northeast Portland.
The judge also said he would make sure any sheriff's deputies who are standing guard by the Bundy's as they make calls from jail to their lawyers do not share what they may have inadvertently overheard to anyone else. Ammon Bundy had complained that deputies standing by him were listening to his calls......
"My question is at what point does a person lawfully lose his or her rights?" Ammon Bundy asked.
Jones gave a hypothetical: If someone is accused of killing another person or is an alleged terrorist, should that person not be jailed pending trial?
Ammon Bundy said he'd agree that jail would be appropriate, but added, "In our situation, we're certainly not that."
His brother Ryan Bundy suggested that federal prosecutors Ethan Knight, Geoffrey Barrow and Craig Gabriel "be placed in jail cells next to me" so they face the same conditions he and his brother face as they prepare for a Sept. 7 trial.

Ammon and Ryan Bundy were being deliberately kept apart and their phone calls monitored by the authorities in their 'concentration camps' as Gavin Seim likes to call them.
The two brothers need to get ready to for their defense a judge has refused a defense motion to delay their trial set to begin September 7th.
Have the Bundy’s accepted US law and jurisdiction? I recall they rejected it earlier, which makes moot their claims and concerns over rights.
A US citizen can’t arbitrarily renounce their rights or the jurisdiction of the US. They are free to say it but the government is still not free to accept that notion in part or in whole.
There is no longer a rule of law in the US. This case especially is govt retribution for crossing Dingy Harry and his minion Kornze.
If only their last name was Clinton, they would be luxuriating on Air Force One instead of the Multnomah County Jail
What they did doesn’t even come close to unauthorized disclosure of Top Secret information, but do they skate?
Nah. Gulag Oregon for them.
I just find it idiotic that someone rejects/renounces US law and jurisdiction, then has the nerve to complain about their rights. Maybe they should be sent to GitMo as enemy combatants since they want insurrection and not recognize our government?
Do you understand why they rejected it?
Jackbooted thuggery from the federal government, putting the farmers and ranchers who aren’t corporate and line politicians pockets out of business with their regulation of the lands of the West.
Dwight and Steven Hammond, jailed as terrorists for trying to protect their property from a wildfire with a backfire.
Ammon Bundy and the others show up to protest and they get labelled ‘militant armed militia’ and so on even though they never fired a shot unlike the FBI and their supporting state law enforcement.
You talk about US law and jurisdiction, I see US outlaws imposing injustice out West and the good people remaining silent.
They are undeserving of respect or obedience, they are the SS who have put patriots in concentration camps called ‘jails’ in Oregon and Nevada.
May there be nonviolent civil disobedience of their dictates......
The facts are in dispute. Hammonds, by family reports, started the fires to cover illegal hunting. The Bundy’s engaged in armed insurrection—rejected US, took up arms, occupied federal property, threatened violence. People want to complain about BLM, here is a group being very direct in their actions. We might have a discussion about the Hammond case, but they were convicted. We might question US ownership of lands, this was part of statehood. Personally, I am very happy that 82% of Nevada lands, where I live, are public. I can go almost anywhere without a No Trespassing sign! Fantastic. Do not take that away!!! I don’t want to get flamed (been there, done that), but these people are not the good guys, not role models, not someone I’d want to defend for rights or actions. Heck, they reject the Constitution, the rule of law. I don’t, do you?
Where are the patriots protesting this travesty? No justice no peace, right?
I support justice but I also support peace.
The greatness of Dr. Martin Luther King went beyond his nonviolent tactics. No bottles or firecrackers were thrown at his kind of protest.
But MLK operated beyond the control of the politicians in general and the Democrat Party Machine in particular.
He was beyond the manipulation of JFK and LBJ, the Democrat presidents of the 1960’s.
That’s what we need out West right now, a movement that is beyond the control of the Republican Party Machine and their front groups like the Oath Keepers and the GOP talking head sheriffs who appear on Fox News, but won’t protect their local residents who farm and ranch from federal tyranny.
A movement that is perfectly non violent taking actions that invite federal violence that will make the federal authorities look bad if they choose to use it like Bull Connor did at Birmingham in 1963.
May God raise up folks who can surrender themselves to such a purpose.
I want you to read post #11 from me.
Rosa Parks was chosen to become a national cause in 1955 because the young women who rode in the front of buses before her down South were unmarried teenagers who had babies. That would have been scandalous and harmful to the cause of racial equality.
You can question the Hammond’s integrity but someday someone or a group of someones will stand up and be counted and those who want to turn a blind eye to the decades of wrongs out West will have their consciences finally seared.
