The Second Amendment was never meant for black people

The National Rifle Association is often eager to jump into heated debates about guns. In case after case and lawsuit after lawsuit, they have rushed to get involved—usually when people are defending their concealed carry and open carry gun rights.

Those people are very often white.

Yet the NRA has been silent in the wake of Wednesday’s police killing of Philando Castile, a black man who was also a licensed concealed carrier of a gun, even though his legal right to a weapon played a key role in his death.

“He’s licensed, he’s carrying, so he’s licensed to carry,” Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond “Lavish” Reynolds, explained in the now-infamous Facebook Live video she recorded just moments after his shooting. “He let the officer know that he had a firearm and he was reaching for his wallet and the officer just shot him in his arm.”

Castile was following the law and procedure, and yet he was still shot and killed by police.

On Thursday, I called the NRA and asked if it had issued, or planned on issuing, any comment about his death.

The woman who picked up the phone told me that they “might not put out any statement” about the matter.

What does that tell you? Castile’s death is the most recent example of the strained relationship between black people and guns throughout American history. To put it bluntly: it shows that the Second Amendment has never really been meant for black people.

Evidence of this can be found even before America was officially a country. The first gun control law in the territory that is now the United States was passed in Virginia in 1640. It explicitly banned black people from owning guns, even if they were not slaves.

The slave codes, they were written to oppress and enforce the enslavement of black people. The second amendment was written to liberate all people. The second amendment does not discrimiate between blacks and whites, people do that.

I'm a lifetime NRA member. What happened in Minnesota was unacceptable. What is happening in Dallas is also unacceptable. I think the vast majority of NRA members are appalled by racism and the shooting of Americans who are lawfully exercising their right to keep and bear arms, regardless of their color.

The second ammendment doesn't discriminate and neither does the NRA but the situation in Dallas has made it difficult to issue an official statement to that effect.

The slaves had right to kill their “owners”. Some did and some did/could not. Today, however, there are no more slaves in the US, except for those south/east Asian maids hired by rich middle eastern royalty.

A big argument is-IF THE SLAVES HAD GUNS, THEY WOULDN’T BE SLAVES” If the government takes away guns, guess what we are?

What the SCOTUS thought about gun control in the pre Civil War era.

http://www.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/historics/USSC_CR_0060_0393_ZO.html

It would give to persons of the negro race, who were recognised as citizens in any one State of the Union, the right to enter every other State whenever they pleased, singly or in companies, without pass or passport,

and without obstruction, to sojourn there as long as they pleased, to go where they pleased at every hour of the day or night without molestation, unless they committed some violation of law for which a white man would be punished;

and it would give them the full liberty of speech in public and in private upon all subjects upon which its own citizens might speak; to hold public meetings upon political affairs,
and to KEEP AND CARRY ARMS wherever they went.

Frankly, people need to remember that the woman’s account of the event isn’t necessarily what happened.

This is the work of Black Lives Matter, communist/democrat party, and the Obama Administration.

The killing of the black man that was legally carrying a gun, was unconscionable. Cop needed more training - now he will be tried for murder.

Does not justify Black Live Matter racist terror snipers killing innocent police officers. Black Lives Matter is a domestic terror organization.

Well said. The NRA supports the right of all races to keep and bear arms.

The Second Amendment was never meant for black people

That's absolutely false.

The Second Amendment was made for all Free Individuals to recognize and enshrine their Right to Keep and Bear Arms, individually or collectively, for self self-defense, both individual and collective.

All else is un-American totalitarian foolishness...

The police need to be trained to respect 2A. Bearing arms should not in and of itself give police cause to commit violence.

In Early America, long before the Civil War, there were black landowners who most likely had firearms. Some were given land in return for years of good service. For those who didn’t own land in Europe in those days, slavery was the only employment. Some of the Early American settlers tried to follow ancient moral rules regarding slavery, and most indentured servants were white.

Are you talking of the lady in Minnesota? I am suspicious of this entire episode. The video shot by her from the passenger seat...the left side of the car, was clear, it was as if it was spliced in. If a cop shoots four times into a car at near point blank range, there would be blood on the lady. She would be deaf, the child would be bawling loudly. Now what about that right side of the car steering wheel? Not only that, but the traffic was going by on the right side in the same direction, and the cop approached the right side of the car. There are not many cars with steering wheels on the right side in America. Most of them are postal vehicles. Are we sure this video is not the result of computer graphics?

True. But statistics show that those who have concealed carry permits tend to be the most law-abiding in the nation.

The scenario depicted is the biggest concern I have had about carrying concealed. Some cops are just not cut out to be confronting law-abiding citizens who are armed.

Citizens are expected to encounter armed officers without panicking. Officers need to be trained to do the same.

My intention if stopped is to place both hands on the steering wheel and keep them there until the officer is informed of my status and responds in a reasonable way.

If the officer starts acting like an idiot, my hands stay on the wheel. If the officer intends to murder me, he will have to do it while my hands are in plain sight.

I always thought the intent of the 2nd amendment was to insure that the government could be overthrown if it got out of control

“Bearing arms should not in and of itself give police cause to commit violence.”

...Yes, officer, I have a gun.

...Keep your hands where I can see them.

...I’m just reaching for my wallet.

...I said freeze! Keep your hands where I can see them.

...I’m just reaching for my wallet.

Bam!

Of course, that’s just speculation, but it’s a lot more likely than that a cop just shot him for the hell of it.
