Ross Douthat says that the true divide in Western politics is now between globalists and nationalists and this divide is tribal. He explains the identifying markers of the Cosmopolitan tribe, i.e., what makes them different from the nationalist tribe (among them: their out group is Evangelical Christians). Douthat says theres not necessarily anything wrong with this. A propensity for tribalism is part of human nature. More:
But its a problem that our tribe of self-styled cosmopolitans doesnt see itself clearly as a tribe: because that means our leaders cant see themselves the way the Brexiteers and Trumpistas and Marine Le Pen voters see them.
They cant see that what feels diverse on the inside can still seem like an aristocracy to the excluded, who look at cities like London and see, as Peter Mandler wrote for Dissent after the Brexit vote, a nearly hereditary professional caste of lawyers, journalists, publicists, and intellectuals, an increasingly hereditary caste of politicians, tight coteries of cultural movers-and-shakers richly sponsored by multinational corporations.
They cant see that paeans to multicultural openness can sound like self-serving cant coming from open-borders Londoners who love Afghan restaurants but would never live near an immigrant housing project, or American liberals who hail the end of whiteness while doing everything possible to keep their kids out of majority-minority schools.
They cant see that their vision of historys arc bending inexorably away from tribe and creed and nation-state looks to outsiders like something familiar from eras past: A powerful castes self-serving explanation for why it alone deserves to rule the world.

Who would want to have their life ruled by hillary, bernie or a muslim? Did I repeat myself?
Yes.
They are like the former royalty.
No, they’re far worse, because we aren’t even talking about the aristocracy; just the MONEYED/well connected.
I beg to differ. Humanity always creates some version of "Aristocracy" because people cannot help themselves.
It is the MONEYED/well connected people and the glitterati (celebrities) who are the "Aristocracy" nowadays.
We just don't normally call them that.
If we were talking about a much earlier time, here in America and across the Pond too, then we could include what was once THE 400 here and minor aristocracy in London. That no longer holds across the board.
The etymology of the word indicates that it means "rule by the best." It doesn't speak of inheritance being a criteria.
Generally traits get passed on to offspring, so if someone is "best" there is a good chance their offspring will be pretty good too.

No, nowadays we see the historic Urban/Rural divide, with the Urban dwellers becoming more despotic and socialistic, and the Rural dwellers becoming more and more apprehensive regarding the insanity they see going on in the cities.
The "elites" are pretty much all Cosmopolitans who think more highly of themselves than is warranted.
Liberals/Leftists believe in big government because they believe that THEY know better than the rest of us and that THEY should be ruling over everybody. Their prideful ignorant arrogance is straight from hell.
“Tribalism”? Rubbish.
The Globalists erect supra-national bodies of unelected persons who make unappealable decisions. They violate the most elemental rights of The People: our right to self governance and the consent of the governed.
“Tribalism”... typical Globalist condescension.
Liberal leaders think that they are entitled to rule over other people, while the Liberal Poor think that they are entitled to other people’s money. That is why all of them like a big socialist government.
You're completely wrong re "aristocracy", as well as the kiddos inheriting "good genes" and behavior, along with the money and position! Obviously, you don't know anyone at all who is a scion of an old 400 family, nor anyone comparable. I do and you're nuts.
New Age Neo-Con Idiot! I have no tattoos and no piercings. I do not wear colors, follow fads or embrace groupthink. I do not need a tribe to tell me what is right or wrong.
I am a sovereign individual and will always and forever act as one. Pow-wow that fool!
Good article. Unfortunately, as in so many cases, successful analysis wraps up without answering the big question, “Okay, then. What are you going to do about it?”
