PRINCETON, N.J. -- As the nation prepares to celebrate Independence Day, 52% of U.S. adults say they are "extremely proud" to be Americans, a new low in Gallup's 16-year trend. Americans' patriotism spiked after 9/11, peaking at 70% in 2003, but has declined since, including an eight-percentage-point drop in early 2005 and a five-point drop since 2013.
Americans' declining patriotism is likely related to broader dissatisfaction with the way things are going in the U.S. In January 2004, when 69% were extremely proud to be an American, 55% of Americans were satisfied with the way things were going in the U.S. That was the last time satisfaction has been at the majority level, and the percentage satisfied has mostly held below 30% since 2007, including the 29% in Gallup's most recent update.
Americans' patriotism stayed relatively flat from 2006 through 2013, a period that spanned the Great Recession and Barack Obama's election and first term as president. But over the last three years, Americans' willingness to say they are extremely proud to be an American has declined further.

Its no surprise. On the one hand you have the leftists who have never been and never will be proud of this country and those who are so disgusted and disillusioned that they won’t be bothering to celebrate this year, and you wind up with a very low number. Surprised its over 50%.
Looking at Washington D C, it is very hard to be extremely proud to be an American.
First: Looking at the Executive Branch makes me want to puke.
Second: Legislative branch is even worse.
Third: Judicial is as political as the first two and tries to usurp both branches power(s).
The three branches of Government and the people that put and keep them in power have complexity bastardized everything the Founders gave us. And now I fear, it is too late to save.
No, I am no longer “Extremely Proud” to be an American. Like many others, I love my country but I am deathly afraid of my government and it’s favored classes.
It's truly a fantasy land.
All the boys wear 1000 dollar suits and the girls have 400 dollar handbags, shoes, and dresses.
My flag is safely tucked away also.
This is the first 4th on which I shall not fly the Flag.
Two signers on my wife’s side: Wolcott and Paine.
What do we celebrate? The TSA throw down of Hanna Cohen, or the arming of FDA?
My country wasn’t this.
Happy America Remembrance Day.
And a good portion of the other half are offspring of the above.
