Yes you are right its beyond ridiculous. One report says the crew did not zoom into the map on their navigation system. Never thought to do it. The purple dot would have come up labelled Farsi Island. Every time I read about this incident I feel like the top of my head is going to explode.
as an ex navy officer - I can understand the senior brown shoe not knowing what to do - course he shouldn’t have been there to begin with. The failure of the black shoe on the other boat is so obscene to my naval heritage as to nearly make me denounce my shellback.
However, that is nothing in comparison to the total failure of leadership and oversight at the CTG level for training, maintenance and operational oversight in a known high risk environment which just spouts a lack of concern for anything - including personnel - other than personal concerns associated with never saying no and getting the next promotion.
Started in the 90s and is a driver as to why I left.
