It's hard for me to understand how this happened. When I was in college about 50 years ago, I spent three summers working as a fireman on a large railroad. There was a block system with red, yellow, and green lights that told the engine crews if there was another train on the track ahead of them. A green light indicated all clear, flashing yellow indicated approaching train or other caution, and red said STOP NOW. It's hard for me to believe a system like that wasn't operating on those tracks, unless there was some kind of sabotage.

I understand what you mean, libstripper. I dearly hope it ISN’T the “S” word you referenced. And if it is that word, would that ever be revealed to us? A friend of mine who is a retired railroader stated he thought it could be someone who wasn’t alert - and therefore missed any alarms.
Either scenario is horrible to contemplate.
